@pikuma @fabynou "My guess is that, in full screen, memory writes and reads to the VGA are given direct access to the hardware to preserve performances." - yes, that's correct. in full-screen mode, VMM32/VDD bypassed the pagefault->GDI translation layer and wrote directly to VGA memory.

Doom's source code should be a mandatory study for all CS students: - Relatively simple. - A lesson in platform independent. - Optimized, yet very readable code. - Demonstrate how to pick your battles: the engine is very high quality code, while the game logic is a bit of a mess. - Use its own memory allocator, with a proto-GC.

I wrote the foreword of "Video Game Map: SNES - Volume 2" (retrogamebooks.com/products/video…). Get it while it's hot.
