A bad day is about 4 hours and a good day is 6.5. My workday lasts 8 or 9 hours total. 4 hours is obviously bad, but i could live with a consistent 6.5. However, not all hours are equally impactful. Focused deep work on a core project is worth far more than time spent passively attending meetings or replying to messages. Next changes are to actively track deep work vs shallow work. I'm also going to start using @focusmate regularly for deep work sessions. ty @NeelNanda5 and @parconley for the tip.

notes on improving my (pretty poor) productivity: I've started using clockify to track how many hours in the workday I'm actually doing a task (compared to playing chess, checking twitter etc).

@NanouuSymeon @focusmate I think you have the first 3 sessions or so for free. Otherwise, for the afternoon, when you get tired... there is nothing better. Worth the price.

Sometimes I wish there was a group that held meetings that you could go to so instead of staring at your computer screen you could go to your meeting and say hello my name is Brian and I’m unmotivated and depressed and then you could at least have done one thing today…

There's an app and a community, @focusmate, which provides this as a service and pairs you up with a random commitment partner from around the world. I've heard that it works great. Never tried it because I thought it was a paid app. Just found out that 3 sessions a week is free

Set up a commitment device with the kid: we get together on GMeet for an hour every week at a fixed time and silently work on something that each of us have been procrastinating on. I'm looking forward to this
