The Golf Digest rankings originated in 1966 with "America's 200 Toughest Courses" (when "toughness" was often synonymous with "good"). It was based on USGA course ratings as well as input from regional selectors, usually professionals and high ranking amateurs. Some observations: -Many of the courses on the list are "where are they now." Golf design has come a long way. -The USGA's rating system was more rudimentary. 75 was the highest available rating. Today some courses are 80+. -Pebble Beach was one of them rated 75, and this was before a U.S. Open was played there. -Other 75s were Cypress Lakes & Pine Tree (FL), Medinah #3, Hazeltine & Concord (NY). -Pine Valley, Merion, WFW & Oakmont are only in the 71-73 range. No Shinnecock. People saw and experienced golf differently in the '60s.
