MICHAEL presents an overly audience-friendly take on Michael Jackson’s life story (only up until the release of “Bad”) that will work for the masses and devoted fans eager to watch one of the world’s largest entertainers at the peak of his popularity “play the hits” and find the courage to stand up to his abusive father (portrayed with simmering tension in every scene by Colman Domingo) on the big screen. However, the direction by Antoine Fuqua is as straightforward as it gets for music biopics, playing things so safely that it offers nothing revelatory or even remotely compelling, unless that deeper exploration is being reserved for the supposed second film(?). Jaafar Jackson is undeniably impressive though, capturing his uncle’s mannerisms, stage presence, and vulnerability in a genuine breakout performance. And shoutout to Juliano Krue Valdi who excels as young Michael with only a fraction of the screen time. Ultimately, you’ve seen this film many, many times before.

@AKlay19 There’s no reason for the @TheAcademy to do March ceremonies. Way too long and we get awards season fatigue at that point.

‘MICHAEL’ is tracking to open between $55M-$60M at the domestic box office. It would surpass the previous record for a musical biopic, currently held by Bohemian Rhapsody (2018), which opened to $51M. (Source: deadline.com/2026/04/michae…)

@PaulSRai The score for Project Hail Mary is more traditional to the music branch

I think 9 is its ceiling. I have it for 7 noms. Cinematography will have massive contenders that Fraser could miss, considering what Sandgren does on DUNE 3. Score I’m doubtful. The music branch has it out against Pemberton—consistently ignored for some bizarre reasons. Maybe🤷‍♂️
Brian Rowe@mrbrianrowe

My ridiculously early Oscar prediction for Project Hail Mary is that it gets 9 nominations • Best Picture • Best Actor • Best Adapted Screenplay • Best Cinematography • Best Film Editing • Best Original Score • Best Production Design • Best Sound • Best Visual Effects

SENTIMENTAL VALUE (2025): 9 total Oscar nominations including Editing and Directing. 4 acting nominations, which is the most for an international film. And yet all they could give this movie is Best International Feature?? I’m still beyond pissed yo. We wanted an acting win!

Between PROJECT HAIL MARY, DISCLOSURE DAY, THE ODYSSEY, DIGGER, and DUNE: PART THREE, there are already a LOT of blockbusters that could get a Best Picture nomination next year.

@AKlay19 @TheWhaleFace I think for now, predicting the winner for this category will be “tricky” - we will need a couple of years of data to finally understand Best Casting. It would be impossible to know if the previous BP winners in the last couple of yrs would have taken the award.

So ONE BATTLE AFTER ANOTHER won exactly what ANORA did last year (Picture/Director/Acting/Screenplay/Editing) with the addition of Casting, which ANORA also might have won had the category been around last year.

@AKlay19 @TheWhaleFace It seems that a possible trend has been established where the Best Casting Oscar could always go to the BP winner.
