@MatthewJDalby Am I missing some sarcasm or something? You’re evidently one of these “hyper literate elites”, why have you not been seduced by these “dangerous ideals”? You sound like a Maoist or maybe a shill for Reform who just want to stop the rot in the class system and keep the people down

The hyper literate elites are also particularly vulnerable to dangerous ideals spread and justified through complex language. The people who aren't so good at reading comprehension can sometimes have more sensible opinions because of that.
Matthew Yglesias@mattyglesias

If you have the basic skills to participate in the discourse at all — like you can read and comprehend a New York Times article in order to complain about it — you’re in a weird, out of touch, elite bubble. slowboring.com/p/in-defense-o…

@EatSleepCycle One of the things I was always most jealous of Tim’s tours was the calorie loading. I love to be able to eat that quantity of delicious foods. I really should take up cycling.

Getting ready to ride. How many hash browns??! It’s so easy to go into calorie debt on a cycle tour. As you can see we’ve no intention of that happening.

@EatSleepCycle Summer’s not the same without a Tim adventure to follow in minute detail. I used to track his route on google earth. Still sad.

I have also just published this on my website: an account of a trip to the Isle of Wight we took together in 2021. annacycles.co.uk/post/isle-of-w… We miss you Tim. It's still hard to believe he's gone.

I left this site in January this year. I was sad to deactivate my account; I'd met so many great people through this platform, but it just wasn't the same any more. Then I learned that my friend @TimMcKenna01 had taken his life, and I came back so I could tell his followers.

@herdyshepherd1 Do they want food security and nature or not? Everything we do is a public good or would be if they got their act together. Instead they’re just creating more insecurity, the result in farming is always short-termism, the worst possible outcome.

This is now about our complete inability to develop a national politics that has any understanding of, or respect for, farming, food and nature Our politics on these issues is moronic Everyone who knows anything about thee issues knows that goverment interventions are vital

Hi @thetrainline! Why on earth is the icon in your email an aeroplane??! You do train travel. If we are to normalise rail over air travel (which I’m sure you support) we need to start with these subtle messages. Travel doesn’t have to involve a flight.

@herdyshepherd1 Are you serious with this retweet? He’s MAGA citing mega MAGA nutjob Kennedy. I’m not against talking about more cows (I have a few myself) just a bit concerned about the pedigree of this opener and what that’s potentially signalling. 🤷🏻‍♂️

@WeGotsTheMeats @Boldyboy1975 This is a common but terrible take. People deserve a decent wage for a days work done conscientiously. They shouldn’t have to be extra nice to get fair pay. You don’t need your ass licked just be happy with getting your delivery.

Aside from the video, and about tipping itself. Here, the way the service industry works, many people get paid minimum wages and reply on tipping to make a living. This allows the hardest working people the opportunity to excel, which I think is important. There are exceptions though, like the person working in a fast food place who merely hands you your sandwich, then flips around the ipad thinking they deserve a tip. With the exceptions of situation like the above, I always tip well. This leads to better service assuming you go back and they know you. When I order pizza for instance, I always get the same guy to deliver it because he recognizes my address, has seniority at the restaurant, so always grabs the high tippers. My food comes record fast. Another place where I get subs, they always put extra meat on my sandwiches cause they know I'm a good tipper.

@herbivoryze Surveys of followers are often obviously completely meaningless. Sample bias is the starting point.

@OliverDowding Grok helpfully gives more detail. You are more likely to die in a Tesla fire.

An added risk of owning a Tesla - you might fry. 83 people have so far, mostly after accidents. Once the fire starts it's immediate and powerful, and very hard to extinguish. tesla-fire.com

@MatthewJDalby So voters aren’t influenced by things. We all just want what we want? There’s no possibility of social theory explaining it? I mean it’s a theory of its own I guess. Maybe a bit limited.

@gingerjohn68 I am doubtful. I think it's leftwing people projecting their own ideas onto voters instead of actually listening to what voters want.

@MatthewJDalby No but that doesn’t mean that inequality isn’t a significant factor in people voting far right.

@gingerjohn68 I think the US just prioritises freedom over safety more. Most of those problems could be fixed but the regulations to fix them wouldn't be acceptable.

One of the parts of these stories that isn't often emphasized is how much rare wildlife love postindustrial wasteland. The nutrient poor varied habitats left in the remains of past industries with no fertiliser or pesticides often creates ideal places for rare wildlife.

I’m tired of hearing about bats. Do you want to hear a story about jumping spiders and the town that disappeared? I think I might be breaking this story – do come be the first to read it.
