NASA-supported scientists have issued a long-term warning that Earth’s oxygen supply will not last forever. According to a study published in Nature Geoscience by researchers Kazumi Ozaki and Christopher Reinhard, our planet’s oxygen-rich atmosphere—essential for supporting human and animal life—will eventually decline drastically. The research, based on advanced climate and biogeochemical models, predicts that within roughly 1 billion years, oxygen levels could drop to less than 1% of what they are today.
The main reason for this decline is tied to the natural evolution of the Sun. As the Sun gradually becomes brighter and hotter over time, Earth’s climate will warm up. This warming will weaken the carbon–silicate cycle, the process that regulates carbon dioxide in the atmosphere. As CO₂ levels fall, plants and photosynthetic organisms will struggle to survive, reducing the amount of oxygen they produce. Once this process accelerates, oxygen levels will plummet, leaving the planet inhospitable for most life forms.
However, despite what many viral headlines suggest, this isn’t an immediate threat. Articles claiming that Earth is “running out of oxygen soon” exaggerate the timeline. NASA researchers have clarified that this oxygen decline will unfold over a billion-year timescale, not in a matter of decades or millennia. Some sensationalized reports even claim oxygen could begin depleting within 10,000 years—but these are speculative and not supported by current evidence.
In short, Earth is not on the verge of an oxygen crisis anytime soon. What NASA’s research truly shows is a reminder of the planet’s long-term evolution and the fragile balance that allows life to exist. While our generation won’t face this issue, it’s a fascinating glimpse into how Earth’s environment will transform far into the future. 🌍💨
Silky really got randomly asked by a little girl for a pic claiming she watches him all the time, only for him to ask what his name was and she said “Slinky” 😭💀
