When my grandmother was 99 she had a pacemaker fitted. They flew her to Wellington for the operation. Before they went the guy asked her if she wanted to be resuscitated. She said yes. The guy then asked her again, explaining that it can cause quite painful injuries. She was a completely capable woman of full mental capacity and said yes she understood and please resuscitate her if she needed it. He then asked her a third time, telling her that her quality of life might be different. At that point, my grandmother turned to my father and asked “What does he want me to say?” and Dad then intervened telling the now very defensive guy to knock it off. That kind of low level pressure happens in the health system every day.

We need to have those hard conversations because the majority of people have no clue about what the reality is when you have CPR/are intubated past a certain age. It’s horrific and barbaric.

I dislike the ‘dying with dignity’ argument. I do see the empathic side of it, but I find it condescending to tell someone what’s best for their ‘dignity’, taking away their hope. When someone is informed of the possible outcomes and they still choose to go ahead, the conversation about that should end.

Thinking about the time my baby was in the ER and had a med student checking his ears. I said "good job buddy" (to my kid) and the med student said "thank you, it's been a long day." I'm glad it maybe helped.

@queerBengali There is a way to point out that nursing is a separate field from medicine and has less scientific education without demoting nursing to “give care and pass meds.” Not sure I could be an effective triage nurse at a busy ER if that’s all I’m expected to know how to do.

People are going to hate me for saying this, and I don’t care, but a nurse does not even get the level of scientific education that a premed student does. They are great at their job, which is providing care and medications on schedule. The US has confused people about which is a caring profession and which is a scientific profession and this is very specifically a US issue.
