@treeaston The flood of VOTE NO ads on TV was mind-blowing. There were 5 of them playing simultaneously at the gym the other day on 5 different channels.

The spread in VA is closer than we partisan hacks might like because the GOP did a pretty decent job mobilizing and also because VA has a disproportionate number of "we shouldn't fight fire with fire" Democrats and I love them all very much but they are weenies.

I have no idea why states like West Virginia aren't 100% on board with this. You aren't one of the 7 states that presidential candidates care about. You aren't even close. They know you're in the bag and they ignore you entirely.

@freemmatt Interesting you bring up CA, a state that doesn't require voter ID, an has an indeterminate number of illegal immigrants. So a vote under those conditions is treated equal to one in Virginia where voter ID laws are determined by the Virginia government, which we vote on.

@hiddukel No. Winner-take-all electoral college voting means that my vote in WV doesn't count at all. You know which state had the 3rd most Trump voters in 2024? California. 6 MILLION votes that don't go to the Republican, ever. How many more would there be if they thought it mattered?

@freemmatt Your vote is always worth something regardless of whether your team wins or loses. I'm just generally against the idea of it being worth less. This is of course totally on-brand for Democrats

@hiddukel Because the person that gets the most votes should win. Maybe the US wouldn't rank 31/50 in voter turnout in western democracies if people didn't feel like voting was a complete waste of time because they live in a winner-take-all state where the outcome is already decided.

@freemmatt Meaningful is debatable when you dilute it this far. Especially to your own state's voters. Ironically this would've handed Virginia to Trump, besides losing here. How is that possibly fair for Virginians?

@hiddukel It could also be argued that if Virginia continues to swing as blue as it has, this would be the only way your vote is ever going to count again. I've voted in every presidential election since 2000 and I've never cast a meaningful vote. It's thrown out every election.

@hiddukel @BruceBartlett Yeah except their policies were extreme right down the line. They opposed Roe, almost all social safety programs, marriage equality, and raising minimum wage. They supported wars of choice and massive tax cuts for the wealthy. Even your boring guys do shit that your flank wants.

I'm a single-issue voter--I support whichever Democrat has the best chance of winning the general election. There is no other issue I care about. Sadly, that is not the top priority for many Democrats.
