The great Willie Mays once said, “…What shape your mind is in, is what makes the biggest difference of all.” Conversely, what shape your mind is NOT in (being overly conscious or aware of what you are doing), is just as important.

Perfectionists: Have very high standards and feel as if they should never fall short of those standards. Optimalists: Have the same very high standards but know that from time to time they will fall short, they will make mistakes, etc. As the great positive psychologist Tal Ben-Shahar says, “Perfectionists reject everything that deviates from their flawless, ideal vision, and as a results suffer whenever they don’t meet their own unrealistic expectations.”… “Optimalists accept, and make the best of, everything that life has to offer.” Optimalist > Perfectionist all day, every day.

@TewksHitting Ted was not known as a wordsmith. The wording of hitting instruction is the key to learning. It is also the cause of much conflict.

"The baseball swing is a hard push-swing... You get your power not so much from the wrists or the arms and shoulders, but from the rotation of the hips into the ball." - Ted Williams That wording has always intrigued me.

Dean Smith said, "A leader's job is to develop committed followers. Bad leaders destroy their followers' sense of commitment." Leaders develop commitment through their actions. • They care. • They lead by example. • They build relationships. How to Lead by Example: 1. Don't just tell people to work harder, show them how. 2. Don't just tell people to have a great attitude, display one. 3. Don't just accept the status quo, create change. 4. Don't just expect teamwork, collaborate. 5. Don't just preach adaptability, embrace change willingly. 6. Don't just talk about integrity, be a person of character. 7. Don't just emphasize growth, invest in continuous learning. 8. Don't just demand accountability, take responsibility for your actions. Great leaders build commitment by rolling up their sleeves and demonstrating their own dedication and effort. They lead by their example. By being the person you want to work with, leaders build trust, motivate, and create an environment where everyone feels encouraged to give their best.

A couple sound bites that stood out to me from @jgohlke34 after Oakland beat Kentucky last night… 1. He puts his phone away 2 hours before the game and doesn’t check it for a while after the game either. This should be a non-negotiable for ALL athletes and something they all should implement into their pre-game and post-game routines. Nothing leads to more mental fatigue, and zaps energy and being in the moment as much as the phone. 2. True belief in yourself and your team is a POWERFUL thing. When you know deep down that you don’t just belong on the same court/field as others, but that you are the best player on it, magic happens.

Phil Jackson said, "Good teams become great ones when the members trust each other enough to surrender the Me for the We." Great teams come together. • They trust each other. • They commit to each other. • They hold to the team's vision. Great teams understand the importance of trust, sacrifice, communication, and commitment. They don't let dysfunction take over. The Five Dysfunctions of a Team according to Patrick Lencioni 1. Absence of Trust - Trust is the foundation of any team. When team members are reluctant to be open up and communicate, it blocks trust and performance. Overcoming this requires openness and the willingness to share weaknesses and fears without fear of reprisal. 2. Fear of Conflict - Healthy conflict is essential for growth. Teams that avoid conflict out of fear of discord end up with unresolved issues and tension. Encouraging open and constructive conflict leads to better decision-making and problem-solving. 3. Lack of Commitment - Without commitment, teams cannot achieve their goals. This dysfunction arises from ambiguity in direction and priorities. Setting clear goals and creating active buy-in from team members are crucial for commitment. 4. Avoidance of Accountability - When team members are not held accountable, standards start to slip. A culture where people are regularly held responsible for their performance creates a sense of collective responsibility and excellence. 5. Inattention to Results - The ultimate goal of any team should be collective results. When individual goals overshadow team goals, it leads to stagnant progress. Emphasizing shared success is essential for driving team performance. "Teamwork is not a virtue, but rather a choice. It's a strategic decision and an intentional one." - Patrick Lencioni

Jim Valvano said, "How do you go from where you are to where you wanna be? And I think you have to have an enthusiasm for life. You have to have a dream, a goal. And you have to be willing to work for it." 3 Steps: 1. Have a vision. 2. Set a goal. 3. Be passionate about it.

Kelvin Sampson said, You're not a loser in anything until you quit. Don't quit." Resilience is the process of adapting and recovering in the face of adversity. • It means adaptability. • It means toughness. • It means emotional strength. Resilience is a skill to learn and a mindset you develop over time.
