German hyperinflation didn't spring out of nowhere. There is a lot to be said about things like the occupation of the Rhur and war reparations leading to inflation, and it's true that those events did aggravate the situation. But the reality is that German Hyperinflation was really just the culmination of a trend in the devaluation of the German Mark that began in 1914.

@AlmostMedia I have not seen prices move up in the real world for most of these consumer goods thus far in the US although I agree that they have to go up. Still time to buy at today’s prices.

Who is more self sufficient? Someone who spends a small fortune on gadgets or someone who knows how to navigate basic challenges and problems with very few resources?

Making a habit of air drying your clothes, walking instead of relying on a car, wasting less food whenever possible are all habit changes that require no purchases but make your life more resilient to future shocks or surprises.

No one knows what will happen after the cease fire that was declared today but more people than ever are thinking about the fragility of the global energy system and supply chain infrastructure. The systems we live in are very fragile, at core, and it is reasonable to see that.

@DissentFu I went to Costco and Walmart today and tomorrow I’ll go back to Costco and then to Trader Joe’s. I’m stocking up on non-perishables as all this stuff will soon cost a lot more. Now I just need to find some storage options.

An American woman went to Cold Stone Creamery. This tiny ice cream cost her $9. Inflation is becoming humiliation. How much more expensive can life in America get?

@DeItaone Everything we buy arrives to us directly or indirectly through diesel power and this is highly inflationary. The same goods will cost more if the diesel shipping costs are higher. Add rising fertilizer and plastic and everyone sees a much higher cost of living.

DIESEL PRICES NEAR RECORD HIGH The national average diesel price hit $5.52/gal this morning (GasBuddy), just 30¢ below its all-time high—likely to be reached within 3–5 days.

US manufacturers of soda bottles, peanut butter jars, sandwich bags and just about anything else made of plastic are getting squeezed as the Iran war chokes off supplies of key components. Several makers of monoethylene glycol and purified terephthalic acid have declared forces majeures as the Persian Gulf conflict damages oil fields, disrupts processing plants and halts most shipping through the Strait of Hormuz. #oott bloomberg.com/news/articles/…

@MarioNawfal It’s best to assume the worst in situations like this because the cost of being wrong is much lower than if you assume nothing can go wrong.

🇸🇦 Nearly 4 million barrels of oil a day passed through the Red Sea’s Bab el-Mandeb Strait in March, up from 3 million the month before. The highest level since October 2023. Saudi has been rerouting oil across the country through its East-West pipeline rather than shipping through the Strait of Hormuz. But it’s only a partial fix, and if the Houthis close the Strait, we're all screwed! Source: AP

🇺🇸🇮🇷 Trump says Iran will never have a nuclear weapon. The question nobody has fully answered is what happens to the uranium that already exists. The IAEA says Iran has 972 lbs of uranium enriched to 60% purity. Weapons grade is 90%. That gap is a short, technical step. The material is buried in hardened facilities across a country the U.S. has been bombing for over a month. Option 1: send in up to 1,000 specially trained troops to secure and remove it by force. These would be America's most elite forces operating in an active war zone, handling nuclear material, deep inside Iran. Option 2: negotiate a surrender of the material as part of a peace deal. Much cleaner. But crucially, it requires Iran to agree. And Iran is currently saying it will fight until "complete victory." Here's the political math: If Trump sends ground troops and something goes wrong, the midterms become a referendum on dead Americans in Iran. But if he leaves the uranium in place and declares victory, the same problem remains. And now they’re more pissed than ever. There is no clean answer here. Just a choice between risks that all have consequences. Source: AP

There are very few times where I’d recommend a payment plan or buy now pay later for necessities. This may be a unique time where making a larger order on a prudent amount of credit could be beneficial if prices move up.

Grains are still very cheap in bulk. Depending on how quickly you plan on using them, you may only need a basic airtight plastic storage container. They expire at a grain specific rate based on storage conditions. With Mylar bags, stored properly, they can last years.

Canned sardines have powerful macros. Tuna or salmon is good as well. Peanut butter is an incredibly calorically dense shelf stable food. Canned pumpkin provides a lot of vital nutrients. Store brand versions (Walmart or Costco) offer good value over premium brand names.
