I think when discussing Ancient Egypt the categorization of its history into contiguous dynasties belies its duration- Iraq went from Sumerian, Akkadian, Babylonian, Assyrian, Bronze Age Collapse, Neo-Assyrian, Neo-Babylonian, Achaemenid, to Seleucid in that same span

@lefineder I'd question the capacity of a relatively small invading force to carry out a robust census in a period of transitory government and conflict and a vanishingly small number of Arabic and Coptic speakers. If the popn appears low, it's probably because they haven't counted everyone

The census taken by Napoleon when he arrived in Egypt indicated its population was around 3–4 million people, lower than it was 2,000 years ago under the Greco-Romans and possibly comparable to the population size under the New Kingdom, more than 3,000 years ago. It's true that growth in the past was slow, but even worse, in many places the story of the past isn't just about slow growth but about complete stagnation and decline.
Zoomer Green 🌲@jusderaisingroy

Over 100 generations, 2500 years, ancient Egyptians managed to double productivity of grains in a hectare. Most of history is about as mobile as tectonic plates.

Thats not completely true, most of it is but we do actually have writing from slaves themselves- the famous historian polybius, for example. OP isnt wrong but the situation is more complex
Everything Price Sufferer (but especially eggs)@agraybee

I'm begging everyone to realize that everything we know about ancient slavery comes from the slaveowners, and the only way to keep slaves from running away is through extraordinary violence.

@Trans_Lykeia A surprising number of old societies get seen as ‘progressive for the time’ simply because the Romans set the bar so incredibly low that things like ‘divorce exists’ and ‘women can own property sometimes under specific conditions’ seem incredibly feminist in comparison.

Norse society had widespread slavery, fairly strict patriarchal roles (shieldmaidens are the exception not the rule) and ingrained homophobia. Though not especially centralised and definitely plugged into wider trade networks, it was still highly stratified and not very pleasant
Creepertrainz@Creepertrainz

@belladonnafeli Well the Norse were also somewhat progressive in many ways, being more socially egalitarian than their Christian neighbours and did a lot of exploration and trade while the viking raiders were only a fringe subset. The Iron Islands is 100% evil rape island.

As I’ve noted: every billionaire is retarded. If sh*t hits the fan, Argentinians will just kill him & take his stuff. If you had $20B you should build a compound in Appalachia, subsidize the ~5,000 ppl in town via a make work company that loses $20M/yr THOSE ppl will defend you

@InsideN17 Surely the litmus test for this is whether Tottenham's opponents suffer ACLs disproportionately at your ground versus others? I can't think of one happening to an opponent in the years since the ground opened?

Do you realise how bad the PR would be if they actually found a connection? Spoke to a mate about this last Saturday, it would absolutely kill the brand, possible lawsuits etc. as well as intentioned this may be, there’s absolutely no chance they are going to find/reveal anything
Spurs Army@SpursArmyTweets

(🥇) 🚨 NEW: External, independent tests on each match day have already been conducted on the pitch at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium. 🏟️ ❌ These are understood to have so far shown NO DIFFERENCE to the bounce and spring of Tottenham's stadium pitch compared to Hotspur Way. A deeper, detailed analysis is set to take place over time to ensure a deeper review. @AlasdairGold

This is not wrong but you're flying far too close to the sun of asking the "wait, what are you even playing as in Paradox games" question that is best left unasked
Nikolaj🇺🇦🇵🇸@nikicaga

I really wish the parties would try to pass laws and do stuff without your approval. Let them run campaigns and make promises Hell, let rogue generals start diplomatic incidents that can progress to war In general all Paradox games have way too much control

@longtwerp @discordspies That's an obtuse way of looking at the proposition. "Sorry you're unable to make rent with money; I guess I'll have no choice but to evict you, unless you have sex with me" is fundamentally a coercive way to have sex with someone.

@jonford01 @discordspies Except he's not saying he'll evict her if she doesn't have sex with him, he's saying he'll evict her if she doesn't pay rent (either with money or sex).

@longtwerp @discordspies "If you don't have sex with me, I will evict you" Compared to: "If you don't have sex with me, I won't pay you" They are clearly quite different propositions with different coercive effects.

@discordspies Right but the gun to the woman's head in this scenario is the same gun to every escort's head (and anyone who pays rent). Assuming he's not refusing money as payment and just offering sex as an alternative, she could say no to him and just become an escort.

@YourSlutopedia @toonpete85 I agree we're all shafted by the cost of everything. Not sure how so many people can afford regular away trips, tickets + flights/trains/overnights. Fully agree with e.g. the Liverpool fans' ticket price protest last weekend.

@jonford01 @toonpete85 but that was the original point of the post and what I replied to. Secondary point was Wembley wasn't full due to cost in current economy. I also said its down to money. There is no argument here mate, apart from people not acknowledging there are stadia over 40k capacity

@YourSlutopedia @toonpete85 SJP and SoL are just too far off the beaten track to be serious contenders for most semi final match ups. The midlands is really where the matches should be played unless it's 2 clubs from the same part of the country, where you should just use the biggest local ground.

@YourSlutopedia @toonpete85 Fine, 42k or whatever it is. That means 15k tickets to each semi finalist vs Wembley's 30-35k each. I don't like the SFs being at Wembley, but the reality is that the appropriate stadia in the middle of the country just haven't been upgraded in line with London and the NW.

@YourSlutopedia @toonpete85 It's the failure of all those clubs outside of London or Lancashire to expand their grounds in the PL era. Villa Park should be the same size as the Emirates or Spurs stadium. They're pretty much getting the same attendance as they were in 1993.

@gr3n3rd @JRLevinsLaw Leaving aside my personal views on the topic, it doesn't strike me that the Supreme Court have settled the issue as it pertains to a fun-running club allowing self-ID in non-sensitive spaces (i.e. not in toilets or changing facilities).

<unpopular take klaxon> It's perhaps not as widely appreciated as it should be that sports organisers like Parkrun face the very real threat of litigation from whichever side is dissatisfied with their transgender athlete policy. 1/2

@gr3n3rd @JRLevinsLaw Because the court case is what determines whether the litigant's case is supported by the law or not (or if a new precedent will be set by the court). Obviously totally vexatious or unsupported cases can be summarily thrown out early doors, but I'd expect the law to support both
