Is anti-Jewish hatred really that bad? Aren’t you just exaggerating?

Hugely inspiring evening listening to the October 7 hostage @ArgamaniNoa - who the whole world saw taken captive from the Nova festival - talking with @jonsac about her 245 days in captivity, her daring rescue by the IDF and how she survived her ordeal. An incredible young woman.

Finally! Our country is contributing to the effort to stop Iran from throttling global energy by controlling and closing down international shipping – The UK has unleashed its most powerful, most effective response yet... Keir Starer has immediately despatched an expression of "deep concern"! That'll help!! gov.uk/government/new…

@MissLauraMarcus Would you say the same if a politician were complaining about Jewish public worship? I know some who would

“Nick Timothy represented a widely held concern that many ordinary citizens have, and went some way to explaining why they have it. “He started a debate, in a calm and respectful way, on a topic of potentially explosive sensitivity. If that isn’t the job of a Member of Parliament, what is?” 1/2 link in my reply. No paywall

No, Matt, it doesn’t. I wrote a thousand or so words about the debate and the reasons for it. You wrote a reactionary insult about an MP. As for your intellect, you seem to confirm that this is the level of “reasoning”you’re capable of. Thank you for your attention to this matter.

@jonsac @NJ_Timothy I gave you my reasoning. “Rubbish. It’s bigotry plain and simple.” Insulting my intellect only reflects poorly on you, Jonathan.

An important conversation has been started by @NJ_Timothy. Let's not shy away from it. Behind this debate lies the idea that Islam is a religion of dominance, which seeks to confer the rest of us into adherents. It’s a proselytising religion. The Islamic concept of Dawah, coupled with the regular manifestations of violent Jihad the UK and the West have had to become accustomed to over recent decades, is one reason why many people feel a genuine and legitimate sense of unease when they hear the same words terrorists shout as they slaughter us, echoing across our nation’s primary public square. It is unsettling. My article in the @spectator spectator.com/article/feelin…

BBC ❤️ Ali Larijani. I wonder why 🤔 @BBCNews think he's “a pragmatic figure… a man of flexibility… somebody you can do business with” and “he always seemed clever and reasonable.” A man who once talked about an “overreaction” to the Holocaust, adding that he was “neither for, nor against” the idea that the Holocaust had really occurred, saying it was an “open question.” @SkyNews not much better on Iran. I took down my tweet on Iran & Larijani because it was being interpreted wrongly. As Donald Trump has hinted himself, the US may need someone to negotiate with. No good talking to a headbanger — and Larijani, though guilty of all sorts of crimes, clearly wasn’t one of those.

Aren't you the sitting member of parliament who posted that Israel should be 'relocated' to the US ('problem solved'), warned that 'the Jews are rallying' to skew an online poll, and compared Israeli policies to Nazi Germany? Admitted your antisemitism and got suspended for it? @NJ_Timothy never did any of that, @NazShahBfd
Naz Shah MP@NazShahBfd

Too many are too afraid to CALL THIS OUT. Hanukkah, Diwali, Vaisakhi, celebrations of all major faiths take place in Trafalgar Square but British Muslims taking part in an open Iftar, are exceptionalised. From a sitting Member of Parliament - this is beyond awful. Where are we heading?

@JonathanWaxman1 I am not talking about 'better', I am talking about intention and posture. One act is reasonably seen as (and often intended as) a gesture of dominance, The other really isn't. I leave you to decide if that is 'better', but the intention matters, and in fact the effect as well.

It’s hard to be(come) a Jew! But I can also see that equal treatment of religions is a reasonable but not decisive argument. I’m not sure we can make much progress arguing that Judaism is fundamentally ‘better’ than Islam - although I believe that to be the case. We might just have to agree that religion (other the state religion) does not have a place in the public square.

I am personally indifferent to the menorah. I think comparisons of Judaism and Islam in this way are complicated and unhelpful, because the values and ideas behind the religions are very different. Judaism is not trying to convert anyone – it is an exclusive religion and actively rejects conversion, making it very difficult to join it. It is hard to imagine the menorah as a sign of domination, and they are never used in that way.
