One person's dream crushes another in wrestling always. I think Mendez is truly one of the rare universally liked wrestlers that goes beyond school and his reaction was heartbreaking. His story is just beginning and I think everyone is rooting for him as he reps USA

We just published my swan song for The Post: Congress nears tipping point of irrelevance. It’s been an amazing 19-plus-year run, especially last decade of this @PKCapitol column. The Post has been family, giving me this perch to cover Congress. So lucky … washingtonpost.com/politics/2026/…

It was a long, harsh winter in D.C. We can finally call it over. After a long and often harsh season — punctuated by persistent cold, stubborn snow and ice, and a late-season chill this week — the pattern ahead has shifted. Milder air is taking hold, and there are no meaningful signs of a return to sustained cold or accumulating snow. That means we can officially declare the winter of 2025-2026 behind us. We’ve made it a tradition to mark the onset of spring once the threat of prolonged cold and lasting snow has passed. The forecast now clearly favors warmer days, budding trees and a steady march toward spring — even if a few bumps remain along the way. The forecast ahead is promising for flowers — and for fans of warmer weather. Highs surge into the 60s on Friday and reach the 70s by Sunday. But a warning: Springlike weather doesn’t mean sustained warmth. Next week, for example, daily highs bounce between the low 50s and mid-60s — a reminder that spring is a season of swings. Still, there is little sign of any return to sustained wintry weather.

What a HORRIBLE forecast by meteorologists – especially myself. Not only were we spectacularly wrong – we communicated poorly. It became apparent last night that some of our initial expectations would prove fallacious. I'd like to address what went wrong with our forecast:

3:35 pm: The tornado watch set to run until 7p was cancelled early. Risk of tornadoes much diminished after midday showers/storms. Not impossible another watch comes later, and not entirely out of the woods until a front passes. Damaging wind gusts may accompany front late evening. Still have to watch for some atmospheric spin, too. HRRR simulated radar snapshot at 9p shown.

*** Evening update on Monday severe storm threat in DC region *** We are continuing to monitor potential for severe storms at some point on Monday. Two things are true: 1) The atmospheric ingredients forecast to come together Monday translate to an usually high chance of severe storms -- capable of damaging winds, hail and tornadoes -- for the middle of March in the DC area. 2) Even when a lot of atmospheric ingredients are in place anytime of the year, it doesn't always produce a widespread outbreak of severe weather in our region. Some key points to keep in mind: * Isolated to scattered thunderstorms could pop during the morning into early afternoon. Can't rule out them producing severe winds or a tornado, although chances of that are higher later in the day. * Multiple clusters or lines of storms could come through during the afternoon into evening, or the activity could end up more focused as a single line toward evening. * Storms have the potential to topple trees and power lines, leading to outages. If severe storms become numerous across the region, then significant travel disruptions and flight delays are possible. * While the timing of the worst storms is hard to pin down (we hope to have a better idea by morning), it won’t be many straight hours of non-stop severe weather. So if a warning is issued for your location or where you're headed, play it safe and delay travel until the threat has paused or passed. Repeating from an earlier post, here are some tips to prepare: - Secure or bring loose outdoor items inside - Charge electronic devices - Be aware that downed trees could block routes after the storm - Park your cars away from the trees - As a severe storms passes, move to the lowest floor and stay away from windows. Finally: Have multiple ways to receive storm warnings Monday.

** Monday has the makings of an active weather day in the D.C. area. ** Showers and thunderstorms are likely at some point Monday afternoon into evening as a cold front comes through, but will they be severe? The National Weather Service's Storm Prediction Center is bullish on the potential for severe storms. It has placed much of the area, roughly from the Beltway to the south, inside the northern edge of a zone that it says has a 30 percent or higher chance for severe thunderstorms within 25 miles of a given location. That's a pretty high percentage for three days out. A few key ingredients are coming together to fuel the potential for severe storms, which could produce damaging winds or tornadoes: 1) a cold front approaching and then moving through from west to east; 2) a surge of moisture from the south; and 3) strong wind shear—winds changing in direction or speed with height—in the lower atmosphere. However, it remains to be seen how much of the moisture makes it this far north. There is also the possibility, as there often is, that clouds and maybe showers earlier in the day could limit the potential for severe weather later in the day. Such details should come into better focus as we get closer. We'll keep you updated this weekend and of course on Monday. * Tornado touchdown confirmed * Monday's severe storm threat comes as the National Weather Service confirmed a brief EF-1 tornado touched down in Cooksville, Md., which is in northern Howard County, from 7:06 to 7:10 p.m. on Wednesday evening as a complex of severe storms swept by.

There's something about the Olympics that makes them pressure-packed. Being able to handle the stresses and perform is an athletic skill that's worth admiring. But so is admitting to succumbing to it. As the Games close, a look at the pressure within. washingtonpost.com/sports/olympic…

Snow forecast review: What fell vs. what we predicted This was one of the toughest storms to forecast in 20+ years for D.C. area. Why? • Temps were marginal — 1–2° made a big difference • D.C. sat near the edge of the heaviest precip • Small-scale features (like a Norlun trough) shifted totals over just a few miles Models struggled. Three days out: anywhere from no snow to 3 feet. Even hours before onset: under 1" to 10". Our final call captured the sharp gradient and timing well in many areas. Some neighborhoods matched closely. Others were a bust. Where we missed — west/southwest of Fairfax and parts of downtown & east. Why? the storm tracked ~20–30 miles farther east and intensified more slowly, shifting heavier bands and widening the dry slot. We emphasized uncertainty throughout, and this storm proved why. Imperfect — but in a volatile setup, we believe our forecast rose to the challenge.

That is the last story I will file to a Sports section that no longer exists. I was moved to features, where I will join wonderful colleagues, rather than laid off like the vast majority of dear friends I worked alongside. I still feel disoriented and heartbroken.
