What people think sheep do to the British countryside: - Overgraze and destroy it - Strip hillsides bare - Prevent rewilding - Outcompete native species - Represent an outdated model that needs replacing - The reason the uplands look the way they do, and not in a good way What sheep actually do to the British countryside: - Maintain the open landscape that is the British uplands: it did not arrive by accident - Prevent rank grassland and scrub encroachment that reduces biodiversity to a monoculture - Create and maintain the short sward that ground-nesting birds require to survive - Participate in a nutrient cycle on land that receives too much rain, sits on too little soil, and is too steep, too cold, and too exposed to grow anything else - Support plant communities, including rare upland wildflowers, that only persist under managed grazing pressure - Have been doing this continuously since the Bronze Age The "rewilded" hillside without sheep becomes purple moor grass within a decade. Purple moor grass is a monoculture. Monocultures are the thing we were trying to avoid. Doris is not destroying the British countryside. Doris is the British countryside. She has been since before anyone had an opinion about it.

Here's how to grow your goat farm to 100 strong animals in just 18 months using planning, breeding, and proper management. **A small thread** **Phase 1: Setup & Starter Stock (Month 1–3)** Start with 1 plot of land. Build raised pens. Install clean water and feed storage. Buy 20–25 healthy does and 2–3 strong bucks. Quarantine, deworm, and vaccinate every new animal. **Phase 2: First Breeding Cycle (Month 4–9)** Use controlled mating so most does give birth around the same time. Feed a mix of grasses, legumes, PKC, forage, and molasses. Monitor health, tag animals, and keep records. **Phase 3: First Kidding (Month 10–12)** Expect 35–50 kids if managed well. Feed pregnant does calcium and protein-rich diets. Wean kids at 2.5–3 months. Deworm and start creep feed. @mckennapr In farming we hate waste in water, soil, or nutrients. Energy should think the same way. Methane leaks mean lost product and unnecessary emissions. Fix the leaks, capture the gas, improve efficiency. Seems like common sense.
