“no laptop use at this table” (￣ω￣;) so, naturally, i decided to see what is allowed on this table using my hoard of electronic devices 〜(￣▽￣〜) don’t worry, they were very entertained and even excited at what crazy thing i’d bring in next ૮ ˶ᵔ ᵕ ᵔ˶ ა - phone is ok, phone is also ok upright using a stand, but not ok while upright and combined with a magic keyboard - psvita / ds / steamdeck are ok, you can game - pen and paper is ok, as is the e-paper remarkable tablet - micro netbook not ok, but it is ok when combined with pen and paper as it appears to be a reference device - just an upright ipad is ok (!), but an ipad with keyboard not ok - putting a book on a holding stand is ok - you are allowed to place a desktop pc on the table, plug it in and turn it on, just didn’t bring a monitor or peripherals so currently my tested rule is; “no keyboards on table” i think the next move is an old school typewriter ～('▽^人)

The notion in this post, and some comments, is that polite public behavior is ingrained in Japanese individuals out of their respect for others. It’s more of a forced social mandate from an authoritarian culture. Keep quiet or be shamed. When visiting other countries I see the Japanese guys often the loudest in the room, laughing and horseplaying in otherwise quiet coffee shops, yelling into their phones on commuter rails, backslapping loudmouths in bars. It seems to me their rule mindedness disappears when they leave the confining mandates of their homeland.
