@British_Airways is the biggest shit show airline I've ever used, by far. All that can go wrong will: flight is delayed, can't check in online, can't change seats (even in business), food is terrible, we wait an hour to get a slot in its own terminal, then bags won't arrive....

Back in engineering school, I think 2007, @lspecia visited my institute in Brazil. That’s when she told me about this thing called phrase-based MT. Her mentorship began with an internship in 2009. Then PhD from 2010. And postdoc in 2014. I’d say that’s pivotal!

Although I eventually ended up in the @blei_lab at Princeton, my first advisor was @MariaKlawe (before she left to kick butt at HMC), and my first papers were with Marilyn Tremaine and Christiane Fellbaum.

Thanks @lspecia for the very interesting keynote talk today at #EAMT2020! It was super cool to learn more about unsupervised QE and how it can be used for evaluating MT for gisting!

'I feel a combination of optimism and relief that AI will make us better translators but not obsolete,' says @KatyDerbyshire at the close of 'Translators: Robots in Disguise'. Big thank you to Katy, Duncan Large @bcltuea and @lspecia for their talk on #AI and #LiteraryTranslation

#emnlp2020 was my first experience as an Area Chair. I worked as hard as I could to read all the papers and to engage the reviewers in post-rebuttal discussion. But in the end, only 9% made it into the Proceedings, while 14% made it into the Findings.

@eltimster I had the opposite for a paper on multilingual models (English, Estonian, Romanian, Chinese, Sinhala & Nepalse): "As an empirical paper for QE, only using similar European languages are not so convincing. Studies on both similar & distant language pairs, are more convincing."

tfw a reviewer criticises a resource paper in a lang other than EN on the grounds that "why bother when there is a similar resource for English" and "why not evaluate using a resource which is only available for English" ... how did we get here #NLProc?
