in the world of “marketing” people over index on tactics, channels, and strategies, but the entire goal of the effort, whether a facebook ad, an OOH billboard, a TV spot, or an email is to get people to care about the thing you are selling. The foundational skill that makes you good at any of that is being a good copywriter. Because good copywriting is the result of good research and customer understanding. If you can write copy that converts, or gets attention, you've likely figured out all the prerequisite stuff. Channels and tactics are the ‘last mile.’

I found Stilt's video for our Y Combinator 2016 application. The video was shot on a makeshift table (recorded on an old laptop) at my apartment in San Francisco. Priyank Singh and I were a couple of normal H-1B visa holders (prior international students) who thought a company should exist to provide better financial services for immigrants. We had no outside funding, so we started lending our money. When we applied, we had lent out $25,000 from our savings to strangers on the internet. When we ran out of our savings, we borrowed from friends. By the time we interviewed, that number had increased to $50,000. By the time we sold the company, we had originated hundreds of millions in loans to immigrants from more than 150 countries. Everything starts small. If you are interested in building a startup, just launch. Build one step at a time, and you'll get much farther than you thought you would in a short time.

Wow. I mean I could leave it at that one word because, if I'm honest, it turns out that 3 days of @digitalirish I Irish Startup Week with 17 events and sessions, 53 speakers and mentors, 29 amazing founders (and pitches!) and over 300 attendees...is a little more tiring that I expected to have helped organize... 😮‍💨 It goes without saying that the level of ambition and brain power of foudners coming out of the Island of Ireland and that we got to showcase Digital Irish I Irish Startup Week was truly, AMAZING. When you get to place this group of founders in New York for 3 days and surrounding them with all of the talented people that gave up their time to support our next generation of founders, it's equally truly AMAZING! We really are very fortunate as Irish to have such a sense of community that will wrap itself around the next person that needs help, a chat, or a nudge in the right direction. This was a takeaway I've had before but again was reinforced ten fold this past week 🥹 . A major thank you to everyone that made this possible starting with the wild and wonderful Digital Irish team that very kindly let me know join their group earlier this year, our sponsors, mentors and speakers and I can't wait to see what people think of what we've got in store for 2025... 🙌
