Something I think Gordon Wood is right about is that revolutions discipline subsequent political elites in long-lasting ways - not as much as one might like but often for the better. Think of the Mexican revolution and the still-active ban on presidential reelection.

@friendinrussian the concept has very little consistent descriptive content in Jp (and to a lesser but significant degree Cn) accounts of pre-modernity. but imo this isn’t necessarily “bad”; it was a synecdoche for understandings of the relationship between the past/colonial period/future

Btw, the earliest dates I have found for Benjamin’s utter contempt and even hatred for Heidegger was 1916, thirteen years earlier (!). There are letters from him thrashing Heidegger’s articles and all.
