Couldn’t sleep so here I am scrolling through Friday’s footage from AcmeAcres.us — and I keep coming back to this little guy. Born this week. First time mama did an absolutely beautiful job. And this calf — almost grey, almost purple. Stunning. Haven’t had one come out that color before and I’ll be honest, I stood there for a minute just taking it in. Here’s what’s actually happening with that color. Mama is a black Longhorn. Dad is a Charolais bull. Charolais carry a dominant dilution gene — one copy is enough to override the black coat and turn it smoky grey. Two copies gives you the full creamy white you see in a pure Charolais. This calf got one copy from dad, so he landed right in the middle. Diluted black. That smoky, almost purple grey you’re seeing in these photos. This is exactly why we cross Longhorns with Charolais. Longhorns bring the hardiness, the calving ease, the foraging ability. Charolais bring the frame, the muscle, the growth. Put them together and you get hybrid vigor, solid marketable calves, and apparently — every now and then — something that stops you cold in the middle of a Friday morning. He’s a boy. No name yet. Mornin’ from the base of a volcano. They say natural spring water can have a huge impact on livestock health. In El Salvador, the land does not just have spring water. It is full of it. The Santa Ana region sits at the base of volcanoes. The soil is volcanic Andisol, loaded with bioavailable minerals from centuries of ash. The grasses grow thick on it. This happened Easter Sunday in San Salvador. After the 6pm mass at Iglesia del Calvario, the historic center came alive. A Salvadoran friend shared what it felt like to stand there and watch. Her words: “Just a few years ago I could have never walked the streets near this church. Today I walked them, enjoyed them, and felt so many blessings for how far my country has come. Jesus rose from the dead and so did my country, El Salvador, the savior.” That is not a press release, it is a person standing in their own country feeling safe for the first time in a long time. This is who we are building with. This is why the work matters beyond the genetics and the supply chain and the policy. A nation that can feed itself is a nation that can hold a moment like this one. El Salvador is holding it. Thank you @nayibbukele for giving not just El Salvador, but the world hope. Once again.

The Strait of Hormuz is still closed and commercial farmers can’t make the math work on fertilizer right now. That’s the whole post. Everything else is just details. Six years on the road with no home, having liquidated everything, waiting for a moment in time I knew was coming and had to be ready for when it arrived. The protocol that emerged from all of it is beef and Bitcoin together, forming a mindset and a standard, a way of organizing your life around things that cannot be debased no matter what the system does to everything else around you. We have an obligation to speak what nobody in this country is saying out loud, because sixty-seven ranchers are lost every day, suicide rates among our cattlemen and farmers surpassing those of veterans, a broken money system running dry the same way it ran dry the mother’s milk of an entire generation. Cowboys and Bitcoiners are autistic as hell, both of us, just talking a little different, but seeing the same picture clearly, the peer-to-peer transfer of value, the transparency, the sovereignty that comes when free people organize themselves around feeding each other and protecting their land and their genetic code and their families. Honoring the cow is where all of it starts, and turning this generation into people who understand what stewardship actually demands of them is where it goes, because this is a spiritual movement above and beyond anything else we could call it.
