What a fantastic investigation into how govt's unchecked and untested use of algorithms is denying the poorest their rights in India. By @HeraRizwan1 👇
Adrija Bose@adrijabose

If you know me, you’ve heard me talk about this story for months. @HeraRizwan reported from 3 states. We obsessed over every detail. Google's AI, designed for phones, is now rationing food to pregnant women. Read. Get angry. Share boomlive.in/decode/ai-faci… @pulitzercenter

I've been speaking with reporters about digital #censorship in India since 2008. This is the first time since then that the govt has engaged in such expansive online censorship and I've not been inundated with calls about it. There's a distinct shift in press freedom. #FoE

Modi government is getting X's accounts withheld left and right, and there is no outrage. This is called the normalization of dictatorship. This doesn't happen in a day. You get accustomed to it, and one day you wake up and feel that you are no longer a democratic country.

Is someone doing an anthropological study to understand the rituals of a society that selected a leader so unhinged that he can be superficially truthful, the anti-primate? Not sociological but an anthropological inquiry with an enthnographical profile.

On being asked if he had a conversation with Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu about attacking the oil and gas fields, US President Donald Trump says, "Yeah, I did. I told him, don't do that. He won't do that. We didn't discuss. We're independent. We get along great. It's coordinated. But on occasion, he'll do something. And if I don't like it, so we're not doing that anymore." @ChanbiDevi I am up-playing it. The arrest and the publicity around it, both are significant.

On the recent arrest of 7 foreign nationals: A much more informed piece (as much as a civilian can perhaps be of the happenings on India's Northeastern borders, and in Mizoram, Manipur and Nagaland). I don't agree entirely with the national security implications. But much more valuably, it shows the matrix of statecraft India uses to also pit one ethnic group's insurgency against the other within India while navigating those across the border and their inter-relationships. Creates the kind of conflicts where ethnic identities get blamed more often rather than the state for its role. Aside: The govt made a spectacle of the arrest. That's intentful to serve a purpose it has in mind to try achieve.

I, along with @akhmxt (a digital investigator & OSINT expert), look at the conspiracy theories around India’s recent arrests of seven foreign “mercenaries” returning from Myanmar: Read here on @barbedwires_sub: open.substack.com/pub/barbedwire…

@MorambaAngomcha I agree. And I don't think we have the answers for now to that question. I don't for sure :). But that is as significant as the arrest, I assess.

@nit_set One thing has been bugging me since this news came out. Why now? That too with so much spectacle. Observing with the recent chaos in West Asia in mind, there seems to be more than meets the eye.

On 18 March 2026, one of our tweets was blocked in India following an order from the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology under Section 69A of the IT Act, 2000. The tweet posted on 14 March 2026 (screenshot attached below) is now inaccessible in India; however, the content remains available elsewhere. The correspondence we received from X support did not contain any information on the reasons for this blocking order. The tweet was an excerpt from our December 2022 report titled “The submission of India Today Group.” Read the entire report here: caravanmagazine.in/media/india-to… We remain committed to speaking up against opaque and arbitrary restrictions on free expression. Hard to talk about “integrity” in Indian politics over the last decade, but Bhupen Borah and Pradyut Bordoloi moving from Congress to the BJP is still worrying, especially for politics in Assam This trend, of course, began with Himanta Biswa Sarma+
