That’s not a fair critique of Zelensky. Mehdi’s post is problematic, but so are many of the replies to it. Both over-moralise wartime decision-making. Mehdi over-moralises hypocrisy. His critics over-moralise Ukraine’s right to retaliate because Iran helped Russia. A right to retaliate does not mean it is advantageous for Ukraine to use it. In reality, Ukraine is a politically fragile state in an anarchic international environment. It depends on powers whose conduct it cannot control. Trump’s war with Iran is not good for Ukraine. But Zelensky still has to react to it. And whatever he does, he loses. Endorsing Trump’s war is damaging. Rejecting Trump’s war is dangerous. Ukraine’s case before the world rests on the norm against aggressive war. But that norm has largely collapsed. Ukraine still depends on it, but it is too fragile to help restore it. That is the tragic dimension of politics. Zelensky’s choices, even if they are wrong, are driven by necessity, uncertainty, and survival.
Mehdi Hasan@mehdirhasan

It's astonishing that you, a world leader who many respected for standing up to an illegal attack on your country, now support an illegal attack on another country. It completely kills your credibility. Right now. Iran is Ukraine. You may not like to hear that but that is a fact

Apocalyptic scenes in Lebanon’s capital right now. Israel has launched 100 airstrikes on Lebanon in 10 minutes. Striking South Lebanon, Beirut and the Bekaa Valley simultaneously. This isn’t a ceasefire. It’s mass bombardment of civilian areas.

@Mix3Design Thanks. I will. It showed only black previews at the beginning. A "clear cache" fixed it - since then it's going strong 🙂

I made Blender node previews work on ANY PC… No GPU? Still fast. Low-end setup? Still smooth. High-end GPU? Even better. Blender 4.0+ supported #b3d #blender3d #gamedev #3dart

@OlgaNYC1211 @mehdirhasan So many different subject are getting mixed up into one: - Iran is a terrible regime - the attack by the US was still illegal - as is the closing of Hormuz by Iran - they support Russia... - which may justify strikes on their drone factories, but not on civilian infrastructure

Are you ok? The IRGC literally flew to illegally occupied Crimea to train Russians with shahed drones. Iran supplied missiles and tens of thousands of drones to terrorist Russia to mass murder Ukrainians. What is astonishing is that you want Ukrainians to stand with the Iranian regime

Volodymyr Zelenskyy / Володимир Зеленський@ZelenskyyUa

It is unfortunate that the UN Security Council has once again failed to demonstrate effectiveness and act decisively in the face of such a global threat as the Iranian regime's blockade of the Strait of Hormuz. No one should be allowed to block such globally significant sea lanes or undermine the security of dozens of nations through terrorist attacks against the freedom of navigation. We faced a similar challenge in the Black Sea when the Russians attempted to block our ports and civilian shipping—Russia was trying to suffocate our economy. And we found a way to solve that problem through decisive action, not inaction. Now, we see a similar problem on a global scale. The Strait of Hormuz must remain open to all vessels that sustain vital economy lifelines and maintain normal international trade. Countries in the region have spoken clearly on this, and we support the aspirations of the people of the Middle East and the Gulf for peace. Peace and security in this region directly impact stability, market predictability, and the cost of living in every single country. Such problems and this war must not be prolonged. The world needs a functional UNSC that acts more decisively to resolve acute security challenges of global magnitude.

@autumngirl14 @WideAsleepNima One party literally wants to install a king that wages war everywhere. That social media made so many Americans absurdly think that's the same as the alternative is super handy for the billionaires and quite the propaganda achievement by them.

@oxpal @WideAsleepNima I didn’t say awareness was enough; it’s not. It depends what aspect you’re referring to, but I disagree that the Dems & the Reps are world’s apart. They work together b/c they’re aligned on the big issues. Not going to argue with you, but you misunderstand much.

Look, I know no international organization has any power, will or interest in actually stopping this psychotic, genocidal empire, but the fact that the US has not been kicked out of the United Nations and there aren't ICC warrants for Trump, Hegseth, Rubio, etc by now is absurd.

@autumngirl14 @WideAsleepNima Being aware is not enough though. Trump needs to be gone and waiting on the sidelines for normal politics to start working, ain't gonna do the job. This "both parties suck" is true, but they're still worlds apart. Independents should've voted the better party and then change it.

@oxpal @WideAsleepNima Most of us are Independents, actually. A ton of us hate both of the primary parties. You’re correct about everything except your last sentence. I can’t fully explain the reasons why we’re not doing more, but a hell of a lot of us are fully aware of how fucked up it all is here.

@oxpal @knowforurself @hasanthehun That's not how it works, voter's don't owee anyone their vote. It's up to the party to pick a good candidate that can win, the Dems didn't do that.

The man on the far left of this US entourage today in Hungary raped a woman in 2023. He is unelected, yet traveling with the VP. He’s best known for being the person who brought Melania to the US. He recently pulled strings to have his ex deported by ICE. I have proof of crimes.

It’s time to go nuclear exposing this regime & its enablers. I have information showing @AMBZAMPOLLI RAPED a young woman in October 2023. A police report was filed but nothing happened to him because he likely attempted to use diplomatic immunity (which he doesn’t have) or bribes

@BobbyA8219 @AdamShurey @allenanalysis How am I the one in a box while you aren't even able to address the reality in front of you, where Trump started several pointless wars and Biden did none. What research to I have to do to twist my brain into a pretzel like yours? Watch Alex Jones for 2 decades?

These people spent 18 months telling their audiences Trump was the answer: Alex Jones. Joe Rogan. Marjorie Taylor Greene. Megyn Kelly. Andrew Schulz. Theo Von. Sneako. Now that MAGA is burning to the ground, the bombs are dropping, the economy is tanking, six Americans are dead, and cluster munitions are falling on Tel Aviv They’re quietly jumping ship. No. Absolutely not. You don’t get to build his army and then walk away when the bodies start piling up. You own this too. Every post. Every endorsement. Every “trust the plan.” The bill is coming due. And your name is on it.

@Fressshhh2 @knowforurself @hasanthehun Of course it's the voters fault. The case was clear and the outcome predictable and predicted. That the Dems had shitty candidates is a side story and distraction in the current catastrophic situation. BTW: there were also good Dem primary candidates. Voters failed there too.

@oxpal @knowforurself @hasanthehun The Dems job is to convince the people to vote for them. It's not the peoples job to vote for the Dems. The Dems picked a shitty candidate, hope they do better next time

@BobbyA8219 @AdamShurey @allenanalysis Again, we had "the left" in power. They didn't start wars. Biden ended the Afghanistan war. In no universe is the current situation "some semblance of normalcy" compared to Biden... or what Harris would've done. You're insane for claiming that in our actual reality.

@oxpal @AdamShurey @allenanalysis I said some semblance of normalcy compared to how insane the left became. That’s completely different than just normalcy. What’s perfectly predictable is whether it’s the right or left unjust wars were launched and or funded. Both sides are corrupted and comprised. The system too

@go_homeboy @allenanalysis I think just "speaking" isn't enough. Words are cheap and they'll just switch again to Trump 2.0 if it fits them right. This went way too far.

@BobbyA8219 @AdamShurey @allenanalysis Nobody voted for Trump to get "normalcy". He was openly never normal. And what we see now was perfectly predictable - and indeed warned about. So this is the lamest cop-out. And if this is accepted as excuse, then the same will just happen again.

@AdamShurey @allenanalysis The left went off the rails and was a sick joke. Voting for Trump was an effort to restore some semblance of normalcy especially when he ran on a lot of appealing things. So if those that voted are now saying hey I don’t support him anymore they are doing the right thing.

@allenanalysis You make a lot of sense but this post sense does not. At this critical moment, we should do what we can to combine forces to upend Trump, given that he has become the existential threat to the United States and the world. We should celebrate the defections.
