The EU's "voluntary chat control" lets online platforms scan private messages for known child sexual abuse material without targeting specific people. The current rules expire on April 3, 2026. On March 11, the European Parliament voted 458 in favor, 103 against, and 63 abstentions to extend them only until August 3, 2027 and with strict new limits: - Scanning must be targeted at users or groups suspected by a court or judicial authority of links to child abuse. - It must be proportional. - End-to-end encrypted chats (like WhatsApp or Signal) are excluded. The EU Commission wanted a longer, less restricted extension until 2028, but Parliament rejected that approach. Talks between Parliament, the Council, and Commission are ongoing under tight deadlines, but no full agreement has been reached yet on a broader version. Without a final deal changing this, broad "voluntary" mass scanning of everyone's messages will end in April 2026.
