Zone 2 cardio = the intensity where you can hold a conversation but barely is the single best training stimulus for mitochondrial density. 3 hours per week is the threshold where longevity benefits become measurable. Most people never get there.

Any brands out there that REALLY want to stick it to Nike in this moment of walk shaming should sponsor me! That would show them.

@ChrisChavez I would be embarrassed to be an Asics athlete. Always the losers saying stuff like this.

@Brady_H For your average population, I actually think these are helpful. They guard against overtraining for sure, which is common amongst the general population that trains for local races.

@elaifresh Right. So you're "that guy" that can't let anyone try a sport or participate without the $15k in gear to look the par. I'm so glad skiers aren't like this. What's wrong with people enjoying something without scrutiny of not looking like everyone else and having $5K+ in gear. Sad

Cyclists showing up to group rides sitting on $10k bikes with deep rims wearing PNS: hugely bimdodal, could be inexperienced hotshots or absolute hitters Cyclists on some Craigslist-ass bike with steel fenders wearing a t-shirt: you will not even see them again until the cafe

There's a phenomenon in running that applies to the rest of the world: It's the beginner runners who deck themselves out in all the gear. They try to look the part they've been sold. As they gain experience, they ditch most of the gear. And show up with the basic necessities.

To someone who needs to hear this. I captured the 3h30m bus at last Sunday’s Two Oceans Marathon, arriving with 2 minutes to spare. Observe everyone in this video, and it should remove every excuse you have for not running. These are grandmothers, senior citizens, people of all categories, pushing themselves. One of us had travelled with her mother to see what her son does. What she saw left her feeling so young and challenged. Running, or any other mission, is first mental before it becomes physical. Decide, commit, focus, fail, go again, and succeed.

@JoePostingg It’s more common at run clubs. Those places are filled with losers more concerned about their outfit than actually running.

I don't think this is true. I started running in Nike Downshifters and cotton gym clothes! I got wicking clothes when the weather got hot. I got plated shoes when I started getting fast enough to be competitive at local races. I got a Garmin when my Fitbit couldn't keep up.

@JohnGoldman John/Alan, Is there a reason why you aren't training more? I'm seeing about 6-7 hours of running per week on Strava. Why not add cycling on top of that?

Six months out from the race attempt and we are exactly on pace.
Alan Couzens@Alan_Couzens

@JohnGoldman Yeah, man. Still a ways to go but on track... Training E.F. of 1.45 = Likely Race E.F. of 1.5 1.5 x 140 = 7:36/mi (3:19 Marathon) 1.5 x 145 = 7:20/mi (3:13 Marathon)

@RebuiltPt 1. Tapering is highly individual. 2. High volume = Small taper. Low volume = Moderate taper.

When tapering for a race, it’s important to take into account accumulated fatigue. Don’t just do a 3 week taper because it’s “standard”. The purpose of a taper is to reduce accumulated fatigue from a tough training block. A high volume runner who trains 7 days/week will need a more substantial taper than a runner who trains 3 days/week and clears fatigue well on their 4 off days/week. The closer you’re training to your physiological ceiling, the more you’ll need a taper.

5.55 miles at 9:41 with a 125 HR In Nov I did 12:38 at 135. Even a month ago I was happy with 10:20 at 135. I’ve taken minutes off my time and added years to my life. I am totally different on a physiological level than when I started #ProjectUnreasonable.
