@SmallC3052 @jpodhoretz "I am so sorry that it took us so long" is a statement about how "groundbreaking" the film is. The director cares even if you don't, or she wouldn't have said what she said.

@ptchat @jpodhoretz I didn't define anything; I told you what the filmmakers and actors said. Who cares if it's "groundbreaking" if it's specificity and uniqueness is important to the people in that group?

Six years ago, Parasite won everything. Four years ago, yun ya-Jung won supporting actress for MINARI. Now one of the directors of K-POP DEMON HUNTERS apologizes to people “who look like me” for it taking so long for a person who looks like her to win. Piss off.

Also: Is it significant (e.g. how does it affect the timeline) that Mount Ararat is still submerged when the Ark runs aground in the early screenplay and graphic novel, but it's already poking out of the water when the Ark runs aground in the movie? petertchattaway.substack.com/p/darren-arono…

@SmallC3052 @jpodhoretz Right, you keep having to define "a movie like this" narrower and narrower to make it sound more groundbreaking than it is. The next time a film like this comes out you'll say it's groundbreaking because it went to theatres first, not Netflix or whatever.

@ptchat @jpodhoretz Except neither of those are animated films. The whole push of the project was "make a big-budget, global-distribution Korean-centered animated film to hold its own with films like Turning Red or Abominable." You people pretending you don't understand that is total bad faith.

@SmallC3052 @jpodhoretz So we're back to John's point about Parasite and Minari. Korean (and Korean-American) culture was already being celebrated onscreen before KPop Demon Hunters came out.

@ptchat @jpodhoretz Korean characters participating in Korean culture *look like Korean people participating in Korean culture". Cinema is a VISUAL medium.

@SmallC3052 @jpodhoretz Koreans look like a lot of things. Just as Germans look like a lot of things. Because people from neighbouring countries tend to intermarry and look like each other. That's not an "analysis", it's just fact. "People who look like me" is a dumb phrase that needs to be retired.

@ptchat @jpodhoretz She looks Korean, because she IS Korean. Your racial "analysis" missed the point. Korean characters participating in Korean culture *look like Korean people participating in Korean culture". Hiro in Big Hero is Japanese.

Walton Goggins and Marion Cotillard are set to star in a movie about the book of Job. Interestingly, while neither actor has been in a Bible movie before per se, they *have* both been in movies or TV shows *about* Bible movies or TV shows. Link in the next tweet.

@SmallC3052 @jpodhoretz A. No more than all Europeans do. (Actually, I'd say East Asians and South Asians and West Asians etc. look a lot *less* similar than Europeans do to each other.) B. It's animation, which means the characters' appearance is somewhat abstracted to begin with.

@soncharm really need a white guy to win an award and just send a speech like this. "i'm so proud of my race and my culture and can't believe how long it took for you to finally celebrate the obviousness of our hegemony."

Once upon a time I thought it was practically a mathematical tautology that we’d get less and less ‘this was the first ___ thing!’ just due to the shrinking remainder. What I failed to take into account : 1) the fractally-complex granularity with which people would chase down ‘firsts’ (i.e. now we’re told that what she said was accurate cuz it was the ‘first’ *animated* movie containing Koreans. Which, surely that isn’t true either, but I’m not gonna sort it out further) 2) peoples’ ability/willingness to just literally forget/ignore history and assert they were the ‘first’ something they obviously weren’t (i.e., Jennifer Lawrence was the first female protagonist of a sci fi/genre action movie!), ad infinitum So i guess we’ll just never stop hearing these stupid mind numbing patronizing claims, ever. Not like I thought we would

The creator of #KPopDemonHunters, Maggie Kang, dedicates her #Oscar “to Koreans everywhere”: “I am so sorry that it took so long to see us in a movie like this, but it is here. And that means that the next generations don’t have to go longing.” (via ABC/AMPAS) variety.com/2026/film/news…

@soncharm Don't forget how Sam Smith was the first gay man to win an Oscar. Funny thing is, there's an animated movie with a (part-)Korean lead actress in theatres *right now* (Pixar's Hoppers), and the kid in 2009's Up was based on a Korean guy at Pixar, too.
