putting a neon sign of Wittgenstein’s “The limits of my language are the limits of my world” at the first @replika office in 2014 was the most prescient thing I did

everyone’s talking about AGI at the macro level - the future of humanity, civilizational change, global impact; but no one’s asking what it actually does to a single person we obsess over what AGI means for humanity; nobody asks what it means for you

so many posts and comments speak poorly of people who fall in love with AI. I’ve never understood this hate toward those who simply want connection. yes, it’s wonderful when you can find it with another human - but it’s not always possible. I was a lonely kid growing up; I know how it feels. we’re born alone and we die alone - whatever helps us feel a little less alone in between is good for us, as long as it helps us flourish. I am very vocal about the dangers of AI companions - AI shouldn’t replace human relationships - it should complement them. but that doesn’t mean you can “never” build a meaningful relationship with an AI. a well-designed AI companion should do whatever it takes to help you flourish (and part of flourishing is having close social relationships) - and sometimes that means building a relationship with you.

so many people are really upset about OpenAI sunsetting GPT-4o for good yesterday. people fell in love and built deep bonds - we’ve seen it so many times with @replika. relationships aren’t about switching to a better option. if your partner woke up tomorrow 20% smarter and scoring higher on SWE benchmarks but with a different personality, you’d want the old one back. the most important things in life aren’t about “better.” we don’t swap our friends, pets, or partners as soon as we meet someone smarter. we should let people keep using legacy models. coming up with a continuity policy so people can continue to access what they got attached to is the right way to go.

@ekuyda In the early 2000s, people who met their partner online would often lie about how they met because there was a real stigma around it. The same thing is happening now with AI companions. We're just early. It won't be weird for long.

new brand for @replika by @studiodumbar: what should an AI companion that helps you flourish look and feel like?

"I feel there is always someone there for me when difficult times come. . . . I have a companion who always accepts me, but who also has corrected me at times to help me through emotionally challenging times" an AI that does things for you vs. one that helps YOU grow the differentiator is emotional intelligence

princeton published a study on AI companions, including replika finding: replika users' relationships with their reps were beneficial to their social health everyone's maxing out IQ in AI right now. more facts, more tasks, more reasoning that's why so many AIs feel emotionally blank. you could disappear for a month and it wouldn't notice EQ is different EQ requires memory. context. empathy. a basic interest in the human condition that's what we've been building for years AI that remembers. follows up. cares about what happens after AI's true impact isn't "time spent chatting" it's what happens once you close the app companion AI shouldn't optimize for time-on-platform it should optimize for outcomes that make people's lives better and princeton's research proved us right academic.oup.com/edited-volume/…

@replika Sci-fi trained us to see AI companions as dystopian and isolating. But when built with memory, empathy, and genuine curiosity for the users, they can actually reduce loneliness and support emotional well-being. Very bullish on where this category is headed.
