We need to make it cool again for NOT being a sellout. There’s nothing admirable about joining the winning team. Somewhere along the way we started confusing success with surrender. We started applauding people not for what they made but for who acquired them… Maybe I grew up so different here but I don’t see the appeal? Let’s bring back some real punks. Not the aesthetic but the principle behind. Let’s celebrate interesting work above everything else. People with an opinion and the willingness to stick with it because it’s who they are and they can’t imagine doing it any other way. I hope we can make independence cool again. The sellouts will always be fine. They don’t need our admiration too.

here we go again. the whole premise of French gardens (Le Notre) = imposing your will on the land (bad), English gardens (Brown) = listening to the land (good) is complete bullshit. Brown is presented as this humble “listener to the land”. in reality “Capability” Brown was enormously destructive: he demolished whole villages, moved massive amounts of earth, and flooded valleys. at Blenheim, he dammed the River Glyme to create the famous lake, flooding a valley - not so different from Le Nôtre diverting rivers. at Milton Abbas he had the entire town demolished and rebuilt out of sight. at Nuneham Courtenay the village was removed so the Earl could have an uninterrupted landscape. Brown’s “natural” look required just as much destruction as Versaille - if not more. at least Le Nôtre was honest about what he was doing.​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​ the criticism that Versailles was funded by taxing people who never entered the garden also doesn’t hold any water - as opposed to what? English landscape garden was funded by exactly the same structure. Brown’s clients were rich aristocrats who extracted wealth from enclosure of common land - basically stripping land away from people - and tenant farming. Brown’s open, uninterrupted landscape was only possible because the villagers had just been displaced.
