The Islamic Republic of Iran has just been nominated to the UN Committee for Programme and Coordination to shape policy on women's rights, human rights, disarmament and terrorism prevention. The British government, of course, did not object to Iran’s appointment — even though the Iranian regime has been massacring thousands and thousands of protestors this year. At least it shows satire is not dead. NEXT UP> Satan nominated to investigate sin.

@DPJHodges Actually British (and European) defence policy is simply the wake of American defence policy. It is reactive posture solely.

This is the problem. Starmer's weakness means British foreign and defence policy is now being channeled through the prism of how to save his premiership, not what's actually in the British national interest.
Alex Wickham@alexwickham

NEW: Bloomberg Saturday read — Keir Starmer has resolved to more quickly increase UK defence spending in the wake of the Iran war, as he attempts to use a focus on security to fend off any leadership challenge next month. — The mechanics of how and when to further raise defence spending have been the subject of high-level talks in government in recent weeks, with No10 indicating internally it will press ahead with a faster uplift, according to people familiar with the matter. A decision has all-but been taken to proceed with a spending rise although the details still need to be worked out, one of the people said. — The Treasury has communicated that any major increase would require tax hikes or spending cuts, stressing there can be no breach of its fiscal rules which limit borrowing, several of the people said. Government officials expect a much-awaited defence investment plan to be published in late May. — The discussions form part of an emerging political strategy in No10 to survive the local elections by pitching Starmer’s leadership around Britain’s security in response to the Iran crisis. The PM’s messaging in recent days has focused on economic security, including pursuing closer ties with the EU; energy security; and defence and national security. — “This conflict is going to define us for a generation and we must respond and we will respond with strength,” Starmer said on Friday. Yvette Cooper says they’ll be “putting security, both national security and economic security, much more centrally at the heart of our approach.” John Healey says we’re “in a new era of defence because of this new era of threat.” — It would not be possible to adequately respond to the events of recent weeks and meet that rhetoric without increasing defence spending, multiple government officials said. Starmer still sees the relationship with the US as essential, especially on military and intelligence cooperation, but the direction America is headed under Trump means Britain has no choice but to spend more and diversify capabilities in Europe, they added. — One argued the spending rise could be a premiership-defining decision, answering critics who say Starmer doesn’t offer bold leadership and giving a legacy to a PM who has struggled to convey a purpose. In 20 years Britain could look back at this as the moment the UK became serious on defence again after years of underfunding, they said. — Labour strategists say there’s also a political advantage as it plays to one of Starmer’s perceived strengths despite his poor general poll ratings, and allows him to double down on his criticisms of Zack Polanski and Nigel Farage as unpatriotic. — It was never the case that Starmer would simply pivot to a left-wing agenda to save himself and he always intended to strike a balance between Labour’s different factions, a person close to him said, citing his policies on security, immigration and fiscal prudence as well more typically Labour-friendly stances on Europe, child poverty and net zero. Even on the latter, the PM this week indicated he was not opposed to granting more licenses for drilling at Rosebank as security now comes first. It tough to dissect the levels of arrogance - or the smug, cosseted superiority - of this tweet. Pahlavi is a name millions shout in Iran in the hope of freedom from oppressive Muslìm supremaçy. Owen has a YouTube channel and regularly huffs and puffs on the Jeremy Vine Show.

🇺🇬 A group of 200 chimps in Uganda lived together for 20 years, dominated rival groups, expanded their territory, and thrived. Then their social bridges died, a new alpha rose to power, and within three years the group split in two. By 2018, former allies were killing each other. They started with adult males, then moved on to infants. Over 24 dead and counting. Researchers said they were "victims of their own success." A species that shares 98% of our DNA tearing itself apart over power, territory, and resources. If that doesn't sound familiar, you're not paying attention. Source: WSJ

Yet he does not hesitate in branding the white working class as “racist thugs” and more? Or indeed obfuscate inquiry into and justice for victims of rape gangs? Let alone be “really clear” about Madelson’s appointment, Nick Brown, Ukrainian rent boys, freebie suits etc. And work to throttle free speech? British values and principles?

Yes. I feel European leaders wish Trump to fail. Both because his ideas contrary to theirs - a predjudice - and because their vested interests within the status quo, old world order are being rapidly shattered. Also his ability to act at speed - from idea to implementation - wrong foots and blind sides them.

I can't remember there being an obsession about totting up who has been 'winning' a war the most, like I am currently seeing over Iran. It is entirely because so many people just want to see Trump fail, at any cost, or win, at any cost. Never mind reality. I suppose it's the natural follow on from the chronic blow by blow commentary over Gaza The Footballification of War We didn't / don't do it with Ukraine. No identity politics there. Nor did America ever demand to know Europe's 'plan' before handing over $60m. Evidently Europe never had one. And still doesn't. But "Orange Man Bad" or "Free Free Palestine" has turned swathes of society into foam flecked twats.
