Music folk...just watched a Billy Joel concert from 1990. Nobody wearing monitors and he sounded spot on. 30 years later, why are monitors 'needed'?

@Scobleizer IMO, I don't think walking / talking humanoid robots will be ubiquitous in homes in 8 years. But then maybe the question becomes "how humanoid?" and "define ubiquitous." Are smart speakers ubiquitous? I don't think they actually are, but will be in 8 years.

@timbray @stewartbrand Various thoughts: I think one element is the definition of "engineer". Is someone without an engineering degree an engineer? I prefer "developer" although it may come across as less "lofty". And I don't think programmer is broad enough. . .

@stewartbrand At Google you’re an SWE (“swee”, SoftWare Engineer). At Amazon an SDE (Software Development Engineer). My perception was that “developer” was correlated with the rise of mobile apps but that’s not an explanation. To ordinary people I still say “I’m a computer programmer.”

When and why did the term software “developers” replace software “engineers” or “programmers?”
