Walter "Blackie" Wetzel (1915–2003) was a prominent Blackfeet tribal leader who served as Chairman of the Blackfeet Tribe in Montana from 1950 to 1964. He was a key figure in national Indian affairs, becoming the first Montana tribal leader to serve as President of the National Congress of American Indians (NCAI) from 1960 to 1964. He is also widely known for designing the historic Washington Redskins logo in the 1970s.  Elected to the Blackfeet Business Council in 1948 and became chairman in 1950. He served as President of the National Congress of American Indians, advocating for tribal sovereignty and self-determination. He was known for his work against termination policies, fighting for better housing, education, and employment on the Blackfeet reservation. Known for his friendship with President John F. Kennedy, whom he affectionately named "High Eagle". Blackie Wetzel designed the iconic profile logo for the Washington NFL team in 1971, which was used from 1972–2019, representing a "Great American Indian warrior" to honor Native Americans. In the case of @Commanders & the potential use (down the road) of the Super Bowl Era logo as a throwback and on vintage merch, there’s good news: The families most associated w/ the iconic logo that Blackie Wetzel inspired, & the Blackfeet Tribe more broadly, support such use

It’s constructive to understand WHY retaining the @Chiefs name, Logo & Game Day activities is tenable for @NFL, sponsors & media partners: The Chiefs formed a Working Group w/ tribal leaders & adopted practices based on those discussions & stopped practices that were opposed

Take the name. Fine. I can compromise because I’m levelheaded and understand where that could be an issue. The logo though. Nah. Hard pass on the compromise. You cannot tell a native American who designed Native American imagery that it’s racist. There is no logical sense in that

Yup. The organization is trying to thread a needle where they appease the "bring back Redskins!" crowd while also moving forward with the Commanders identity. It's a tough needle to thread, because that crowd won't settle for anything other than the old name and logo.

@IndySkinsFan The team could strike a deal with the Blackfeet Nation similar to the Florida State deal with the Seminoles. Not for the name, but for use of the logo. It’s a Blackfeet designed logo that the team could use with permission from the Blackfeet tribe.
