So what’s a good iPhone mail client with a really stable and competent back end? I really don’t care about the UI, don’t do much on my phone. But I need it to talk to any random IMAP server capably and with intelligent caching, etc.

It seems really weird to me how mobile Safari makes changes in scroll position look like completely separate pages when swiping from the side.

@bramus I dug into Safari's behavior a bit more (there's some pretty tricky code here). Your testcase is fairly unique in that your janky JS is "pure math". If you touch the DOM from that JS, Safari's behavior improves. webkit.org/b/250653

@smfr In Safari (on Mac) the paint of the scrollbar position is blocked by the introduced jank. It’s this behavior that led me to think scrolling entirely was not async. Would be nice if Safari also painted the scrollbar thumb async (2/2)

@bramus In the Safari the scroll is async, but painting tiles is blocked by the main thread so it scrolls blank areas into view. Not ideal, but the scroll itself is off the main thread.

Use the checkbox on the page to optionally block the main thread. If scrolling keeps responding while jank is introduced — or in this case: if auto-scrolling remains smooth — we know that those actions happens on the compositor. Results: - ✅ Chrome - ✅ Firefox - ❌ Safari

"safari is the new IE" doesn't refer to slow updates and missing features for me. it refers to things like github.com/sveltejs/kit/i…, which i find legitimately terrifying because the only possible explanation is that there is a demon inside the codebase
