@jadel4w That was enough to get me a an internship which became a junior position. And I know people who did the same. Although I didn't became a hotshot in AAA studio, I did get a job, it is quite doable. You don't have to have utter devotion to your craft to get a job.
English

How many juniors have you hired and trained?
Because I’m at 36. Several of them are best in industry.
I disagree. Even if someone does scoff at soft skills they can still be developed. I have data on this. Most humans are capable of soft skill development. Our art test covers soft skills too.
English

Why is this so controversial?
It’s true.
Okay so let’s assume this is hours of quality work.. because 8 hours of unfocused isn’t the same as focused. Quality hours matter. And they need to be high.
Even 10 years ago less than 3% of games art graduates would find work in the games industry. There are simply not enough jobs, and universities are churning out graduates. Most are completely unprepared because they think the degree will entitle them to a job. It doesn’t. Nobody cares about your degree. Only what you can do.
You should spend that time utterly devoted to your craft. If you do not have drive to succeed, if you do not want to succeed with your entire heart and soul, you will probably fail.
Is it fair? Is anything fair? Are we entitled to anything? No. We can only work our hardest for the things we want and hope it works out. Take a chance on yourself, maximise opportunity by working as hard as you can and being open to the varying avenues for success.
If you’re a student and you’re worried about burning out, crunching or having to overwork yourself then your mindset is wrong. Because you’re competing with the guy who puts in the time because they don’t see it as work.

For 3D students: Most I’ve met simply aren’t doing the hours needed to get into the industry. Studying only 10:00-16:00 every day won’t cut it - particularly since only a portion of the day is spent on actual work.

@jadel4w I had no prior exp, was working another job at the time and was mid 20s. I finished a 4 month 3d course, 2 lessons a week, studied diligently, was interested, loved it, but I didn't study super hard or super long. I didn't get to expert level but gained basic skills.
English

@jadel4w I'm not at your level, never hired anyone, not a senior or a lead, so i don't have data and that kind of experience. But I've been a working 3d artist for over a decade and I have my personal experience and that of my friends and colleagues.
English

@jadel4w There's stories of superstar artists like Matthias Develtere who learned by shutting themselves inside for like a year and then got hired by MachineGames to do expert level vehicles, but for every superstar there are hundreds of more regular working 3d artists like me.
English

@jadel4w So I hope you indeed don't push the utter devotion to craft paradigm on your staff members, or the hiring processes, but nurture them in a healthy environment and treat them with respect.
English

@jadel4w So you're an entrepreneur. That explains the work ethic of no work lige balance. I wanted to accuse you of pushing that on your employees for better profits, but apparently you do care, work with unions and try to make good environment for artists, and I respect that
English

@jadel4w Were the juniors you hired best in industry when you hired them? Probably not since you said you've trained them.
I guess we have different definitions of soft skills, what is yours? I wonder how they can be a part of an art test.

Notre-Dame was built from 1163–1345.
Kyiv Pechersk Lavra was founded in 1051, with the Dormition Cathedral being built from 1073-1078, predating Notre-Dame by over a century.
When did launching missiles into major Christian cathedrals become normalized?
Russia wants to destroy Ukrainian Christianity. Anyone pretending otherwise is lying to you.

BREAKING: A Russian drone has struck the Kyiv Pechersk Lavra. Built in 1051, the monastery is the most important site of Orthodox Christianity in Ukraine.
English

@jadel4w Naw, soft skills are like totally different. there's little to do with how good a person is with learning a hard skill. Moreover, a hard skill wizz might scoff at soft skills as fluff and believe that he will be carried just by his hard skills
English

Juniors rarely have soft skills. That’s something that can be developed through working in a job.
Otherwise it’s unfair to self taught individuals. A lot of people can’t afford to go to school.
Soft skills are easily taught, especially when someone has a proven aptitude for learning hard skills.
English

@jadel4w Especially for junior positions I feel that people don't get hired for raw technical skill, the best of the best. Like you wouldn't hire a senior for a junior position even though senior would absolutely be much more skilled, that's not what you hire juniors for.
English

@jadel4w Good for you. But that's not for everybody, not even the absolute majority, yes, even among highly skilled professionals like 3d artists. Nor it should be. Especially it shouldn't be a requirement for a job, despite what employers might want to push for.
English

@jadel4w Put in time but live a life. Utter devotion to your craft sounds really unhealthy. Having other things in life can actually lead to crosspolination between the fields and positively impact one's creativity.
English

@jadel4w Well, for you - maybe, but I would still advice others against it.
English

@Skwerl_Art I feel like 3d is not that hard to get a hang on. much easier than 2d. There's work for junior 3d artists too and that work doesn't take too much training. Not everything should be USA gamedev AAA meatgrinder...
English

There gotta be a middle ground somewhere, I personally do not believe in grinding this hard just to be toyed around by big studios or publisher to make the next MCU or other AAA projects. Not especially in this kind of messed up job market. If I were to grind like that it'd be for my own project and fun. These days I'd rather bet on funmaxxing as far as learning and training goes.
