A common mistake: "Let's abstract this in case we want to replace it later." Examples: 🚫 "Let's abstract React in case we switch JS frameworks." 🚫 "Let's abstract Tailwind in case we switch CSS approaches." 🚫 "Let's abstract Mongo in case we switch Databases". This is typically a waste of time, and often hinders current use too. Why? Because to effectively abstract something, we need to know the API we're abstracting. But we have no idea what a new technology's API will be. Thus, we have no idea whether our abstraction will work with the new technology. In summary, abstraction can be useful. But avoid abstracting merely to support changing to some unknown future technology.

@molly_struve It's trying to take your job by giving you that command and hoping you actually run it.

This makes no sense to me unless they are trying to create a safety barrier between cyclists and pedestrians? Street space is at a premium why put seating there ?

Facebook community chats. Now this looks like a feature that is going to confuse people. You suddenly start getting chats from Facebook groups you are in and figuring out how to turn them off seems non trivial

Sometimes it feels like so many opportunities working in IT are about being at the right place at the right time.

When you build something with a brand new technology, you’ll likely need to rewrite the whole thing a second time, with enough experience gained. Observed this many times. Turns out it’s not just me. Here’s The Mythical Man Month observing the same thing, written ~50 years ago.

On holidays at Charlotte Pass, (altitude 1837m). Apparently this is enough altitude to pop bags of chips.

Day 2 isolation. Covid infection under control thanks to 3 vaccines, but still feeling pretty crook. My trusty oximeter is the prime indication of if I need to be in hospital.

My better half refused to use my keyboard: “it’s too hard to use” I don’t see what the problem is! Next question is: from my keyboard can you tell what I’m normally typing? (And no, no passwords there)

How much more productive would developers be if they didn’t need to deal with certificates and firewall rules? Sure they are needed in production but dealing with them in test environments is a nightmare
