There's been a lot of discussion lately about how one can write comic book TV shows and movies (and other genres) either for the fans, or to appeal to a larger audience. I don't agree with that position, and wrote about it here (free access):

Captain Jaclyn emailed to say the fulfillment site for babylon5books (now closed) was down for 54 days, no email, no nuthin', precluding last minute purchases, but is up now and offering free B5 quote images and a chance for those inadvertently shut out.

@BDBSoCal @RAZ0RFIST Essentially correct. The independent stations led by Evan Thompson's Chris Craft group pooled their funds to license shows through WB DISTRIBUTION rather than WB TV same as they did with reruns. The name Prime Time Entertainment Network was the umbrella for the stations.

@straczynski @RAZ0RFIST I always wondered about the PTEN at the beginning and assumed it was a distributor-kind of like how movies show 5-6 distributors at the beginning.

@RAZ0RFIST That's why PTEN doesn't have a studio name in the title because that would have broken the rules. UPN and The WB do hence the wait. This let PTEN announce its slate in 1992 which meant having works in progress in 91/92 when the exec who saw it all was working there.

@RAZ0RFIST Again you twist the facts. PTEN was a loose pre-existing affiliation of independent stations which were already supplied by WB/Paramount and would have been the backbone of the co-venture. The WB was an actual new network that required FCC approval.

Though I appreciate the comments, to correct the record: WB approached me about doing the B5 animated movie once our Nemesis was gone, I then wrote it, and WB used their in-house animation team.

@kalaelizabeth well it took awhile for j michael straczynski to find the animation studio he went with for the babylon 5 animated movie. while Warner produced it

@straczynski, you demonstrated the Ghostbusters could deliver fresh new story ideas (something the live-action movies have struggled with). Why hasn't Sony been knocking on your door with suitcases full of cash to give us what you did on the regular for a CARTOON SERIES?!

@craigcadero Some of the most fertile times for new art were when gatekeepers and financiers had no idea what the audience wanted anymore so were willing to take more risks. Sometimes you got 2001: A Space Odyssey, sometimes you got Zardoz (which also ruled, but in a different way...)

@CGHorror @destrodesigns There was a planned follow up which was in development in the late 80s called ‘V: The Next Chapter’ which was being written by J. Michael Straczynski which unfortunately didn’t go anywhere and would’ve seen Michael Ironside’s character Ham Tyler as the main character.

@DannyDrinksWine I worked with Steven on a (thus far) unproduced film project while he was shooting TinTin. He showed me around the real time render farm like a kid showing off his new train set. This is man in love with the art, science and visual poetry of film-making like no other.

Film discourse like this is never healthy.
But personally for me, Spielberg is far ahead of Nolan or Villeneuve. Spielberg has been in his prime from his first ever movie.
Spielberg made an entire generation of filmmakers (and kids) to dream big. I can't say the same for the other two.
I can't see any other filmmaker making 'Jaws', 'Close Encounters', 'Duel', 'Jurassic Park', etc. perfectly as Spielberg did.

Do you ever think about all the new movies you're never going to see after you die? Like they'll be announcing and releasing all this wild cool shit and everyone will be talking about it online and you'll just be dead and have no idea about any of it. I think about this a lot.

We see what we read into things. You know this work, so you assume that someone else must also know it, and thus formed the material. But the answer is no, have never even heard of him until this text.

@straczynski As an impressionable medievalist watching B5 while at university I was always finding (imagining) links between the apocalyptic prophecies of Joachim of Fiore (and his followers) and the arc plot of B5. I assume that this was my imagination?
