@DollyT222027 this use of italics is very common. i have found it useful as a reader. don't be embarrassed by it.

I have a confession to make: my fantasy novel series uses italics to convey unspoken thoughts. I'm sorry! In my defense, I didn't know that was a controversial thing, and I'd read other fantasy books where it's used.

I swear to god I have no problem saying when someone I dislike interpersonally or politically is funny. This is one of the worst specials I’ve ever seen in my entire life

@arbysismyuncle @Ohboycjs @GianmarcoSoresi i think you should go on a walk and notice little things that make you feel pleasant, like an insect or an cool leaf or the feeling of humid air on your skin. i think you should call someone you love and tell them something you admire about them. this website is poisoning you.

@tJacquesG1 @Ohboycjs @GianmarcoSoresi "life is more pleasant" and "as a general positivist who believes in objective truth, I cannot agree that there is such thing as objectively funny. funny depends on context, comedian, and audience. funny doesn't exist a priori. there's not a platonic form of funny." mmhmm

@arbysismyuncle @Ohboycjs @GianmarcoSoresi buddy I seriously hope your life improves. you express so much negativity in your life. i hope you get to a place where you can express positivity. life's just more pleasant when you get there.

@Ohboycjs @GianmarcoSoresi i mean there is "objectively funny" i know it hurts your world view but there just is. And where exactly in my reply do i say "Tony Hinchcliffe is funny." Look real hard i might have hidden it somewhere. get back to me when you find where i claimed "Tony Hinchcliffe is funny".

@PotatoMcWhiskey Well, first of all fuck face if you’re going to drive on the road, you need to be going the speed limit. Secondly, there’s literal fucking lanes on the side for them. Also, there’s a sidewalk so fuck you and your fucking bike riders

I think "fun socks" should be used judiciously, as a lot of what's worn today feels more childish than whimsical. IMO, most men should avoid them entirely. But if you insist on wearing them, here are some suggestions on how to make them look less bad. 🧵

@dieworkwear Derek, got any recs for fun socks brands?

@H0ldingPattern @banterrealism this is as inane as a red-button advocate telling me that not putting shopping carts back is blue-button behavior. this does not meaningfully map to the buttons scenario because it lacks the central tension

@H0ldingPattern @banterrealism What part of the red/blue buttons makes everyone suffer at all if 50% votes blue? The premise is that everyone is totally okay if 50% hit blue. And there's no cap to red button pushing. Theoretically all participants could hit red. Not possible for all cars to park under bridge.

@tJacquesG1 @banterrealism If you hit 51% hit red, all blues die. If 5 cars park under the overpass to avoid the weather,(Red) all other cars must now suffer the weather (Die) even though the parked cars do not. If all cars drive (Blue), all cars suffer, but all cars also make it to garages faster

@H0ldingPattern @banterrealism this situation lacks the central logical tension that makes the blue/red buttons thought experiment so compelling

@H0ldingPattern @banterrealism I'm confused--with the buttons, it's possible for everyone to hit red. Here, it's not possible for everyone to get under the bridge. With the buttons, everyone is okay if 50% hit blue. Here, there is no clear 50% threshold to make everyone okay

@H0ldingPattern @banterrealism It's been represented as people jumping on a train track with pressure-sensitive brakes (or already on the train track and deciding whether to jump off) or as nuclear bunkers and nuclear missiles. Here, is the red button stop the car? And is the blue button keep driving?

@H0ldingPattern @banterrealism yes. I've seen so many ways to concretely represent the thought experiment, but this does not map onto the experiment at all

Guys if anyone comes into the comments trying to ask (seriously) how on earth this is analogous to the red/blue button thought experiment, literally don't explain how. They don't deserve, nor actually want to know.

I think i just don’t agree with your premise that a sidewalk is pedestrian space. It’s shared space, just like streets. And if i can’t get around the ped, i’d have to go into the street which is more dangerous! Ultimately everybody has an incentive to avoid collisions so everybody should put in reasonable effort. You just can’t be completely oblivious in public space

While it is legal to ride a bike on the sidewalk in much of DC, when you are on the sidewalk, you are a *guest* in pedestrians' space, and you need to act like it. Slow speeds and total deference to pedestrians sharing the space.
Kayla@caryatis

I’ve never had a near miss with a pedestrian who was walking on the right, paying attention, and keeping kids/dogs/bags supervised and close People who choose to be completely fucking oblivious on the other hand…
