@brockpierson Depends on when. Younger self 16-18, probably not; younger self 20-25, maybe; post-25, definitely. Of course, I separate my life into two distinct portions: Before kids, and After kids. All of my priorities changed the moment I held my daughter for the first time.

I had to explain to my husband (born and raised in Wisconsin) that ranch is very hard to find outside of the US. He thought that the rest of the western world had access to it.

@JasonRink You're not wrong, but I was stupid and always listened to others who said, "That'll never work." Oh well, at least I'm on vacation this week.

I am 51 years old. I can't count the number of opportunities to become a multimillionaire that has been afforded to my generation. Any GenXer with a steady paycheck could be wealthy right now if they made the right decisions. The internet. Bitcoin. Stock Market. Real estate

I've literally driven hundreds of cars, dozens of models, over the years. Used to work for Ford in high school. I test-drove a Model Y a couple of years ago, and it was easily the best vehicle I've ever driven, including Caddies and Lincolns. Smooth, comfortable, spacious, and quiet. Even my wife admitted it was nicer and more comfortable than her BMW. Yes, if you're in the market and you live somewhere that has sufficient charging infrastructure, I believe it is the best car you can get. Just make sure you know what "mission" the car is for. If you're going to be making regular 600-1000 mile trips, it might be a bit inconvenient.

@JefferyCMay @esrtweet @Andercot "Piled Higher and Deeper" I befriended several of my professors in college, and the first thing they did was disabuse me of the idea that a PhD meant one knew how to reason.

I think Neil de Grasse Tyson just plain sucks. He has none of the depth of Carl Sagan, none of the humility Hawking, nor scientific accomplishments. He is a gotcha sound-byte narcissist, an absolute dead weight to society, he just fucking sucks

@DaveBlundin Dave, you and I both know, this cat left the bag in the 80's. Restricting technology has been a game played for decades; this is just the first time it was explicitly done against AI (although, if Marc Andreessen is to be believed, it's not actually the first time).

This is one of the most pivotal events in history because of the precedent it sets. Even if it doesn't stick, the cat is out of the bag: the government can now unilaterally decide who gets to use AI. Over the last few days I had fully transitioned to orchestrating with Fable. It initially felt like the cookie jar was moved out of reach. Now after spending the day with Opus, I've accepted just how monumental this is. Being denied the best AI model is effectively the same as being denied future employment.
Anthropic@AnthropicAI

The US government, citing national security authorities, has issued an export control directive to suspend all access to Fable 5 and Mythos 5 by any foreign national, whether inside or outside the United States, including foreign national Anthropic employees. The net effect of this order is that we must abruptly disable Fable 5 and Mythos 5 for all our customers to ensure compliance. Access to all other Claude models is not affected. We apologize for this disruption to our customers. We believe this is a misunderstanding and are working to restore access as soon as possible. Read our full statement: anthropic.com/news/fable-myt…

"Hardware doesn't work like this..." Clearly, you've never worked in IT (or at least, enterprise IT). Hardware hiccups all the time! We take backups for a reason; we do reboot cycles for a reason; we have UPSs and generators and redundant cooling infrastructure for a reason. As for software, when you include the OS, compiler, libraries, monitoring systems, etc. A single-application platform may be something on the order of 100 million lines of code involved (and maybe several times that). What do you think the chances are that there's a bug in that much code? 100%. And probably lots of them. Hence, you have to find those bugs (one at a time) and fix them. That's the "maintenance" of the code, excluding the obvious things like external API changes, changing business needs and legal requirements, optimizations, etc.

can anyone ELI5 why software needs to be "maintained"? Like why do you need whole teams working on stuff that already works? Hardware doesn't work like this If it functions, it functions and does not need to be changed unless you're replacing something worn out.

@Revolutioig9 Honestly, Toyota and Honda make the best engines on the planet. Car bodies, not so much, but if you could mix and match a Toyota engine and a GM transmission into a Ford body, you'd probably have the best overall vehicle on the planet.

I'm Japanese and I've never finished an American-sized meal alone 😅 On TV, one person orders a plate big enough for three people. In Japan, portions are smaller. We'd probably call that "family size." Do Americans actually eat the whole thing? Or is doggy bag culture the real answer? 🥡

@sakebu_cheese_ A lady down the road from me does the same with eggs. She has a small fridge that she stores the fresh eggs of the day in. You come and put your $5 in the box and take your dozen eggs. She's done it for years. I've seen similar produce stands on country roads over the years.
