🇨🇦 It's pretty insane Canada does not have a national interstate system whatsoever. So here's my proposal, the Trans-Canadian highway. Only 3,000 km or 2,100 miles of new motorway needed to connect all the 15 largest metro areas and more than 60% of the population.

It’s not just about the sparse population, the shield is mostly several billion year old granite. In contrast the states you mention are almost entirely flat plains. Why should we spend billions of dollars blasting through granite so a tiny amount of people can use it? Besides no one would vote for it/support it politically, because that money would be better spent on highways people actually use, hospitals, rail infrastructure, etc

In a perfect world it would be better but in reality it would be wholly unnecessary The vast majority of freight that goes East-West in Canada travels by rail, along with the vast majority of freight coming up from the US. If the freight is urgently needed it is simply flown. Virtually no one drives coast to coast so there is no significant freight or passenger demand to expand the highway. Also ~60% of the country lives in Southern Ontario & Quebec, Manitoba (1.3M people) & Saskatchewan (1.2M people) are largely unpopulated. Alberta is the first Western province with a decent population (4.4M) but that’s ~1,175km (~730mi) from the Ontario border We have highways through the Rockies too but they are totally different to the Canadian Shield. The Shield is mostly granite that is several billion years old, in contrast the Rockies are much younger and mostly shale, limestone and sandstone. So you can actually dig through them, you don’t need to 100% rely on blasting Besides I70 is only 2 lanes each way through the Rockies, the remaining roads are all 1 lane each way, so it’s not like the I75 in GA Pictures are of my time driving in the US Rockies. Loved living there

@tom__mars @cornu__copia Canada should be embarrassed by the Trans-Canada Highway. It isn't up to highway standards for much of its length which causes trucks to divert through the US to travel between provinces. The US had no problem building numerous highways through mountains.

i've completed my 1st month in Toronto.
