The red and blue button test is run globally, and while everyone is sealed in voting booths the result comes in: 58% red, 42% blue. However, there is a glitch in the global death ray, and a message pops up: “ERROR. PLEASE VOTE AGAIN.” How do you vote?

@Fuheng_H @C_bass1234 @ProjectLiberal What separates FDR from Hitler was that the bad things that happened under FDR were a deviation from the American ideal(at least then), while the bad things that happened under Hitler was Hitler’s ideal.

@C_bass1234 @ProjectLiberal Your support of FDR literally proves that. You yourself showed that you can outweigh death and suffering. Basically you're saying someone can buy himself free from sin. And that's a very dangerous way of looking at things.

@C_bass1234 @Fuheng_H @ProjectLiberal The bad things that did occur under FDR pale in comparison to what Hitler directly created. People like FDR for the good things he did(Social Security, preventing the US from falling to autocracy through keeping the American calm in the Depression), and that’s OK.

@Fuheng_H @ProjectLiberal Sigh. Bud. Please stop assuming what I do and don’t support. Also I never said any what you allege I said. You would have to severely twist what I said to even come close. But I forgive you so long as you stop putting words I didn’t say in my mouth.

@fimbres_paul @redrummarts @IcedMeatba3620 That’s… actually sad. Here, it’s no longer about being selfish or not. Here, it’s literally a case of “Please don’t press the Blue Button, death is completely and utterly inevitable”.

Everyone who's picking red thinks blue is the suicide button. And everyone who picks blue thinks red is the murder button That's the only conclusion I'm getting from this

@FacundoLucciano @Rx410 @toposint @Meorianguy22 @niggass69 On the other hand(I saw this one coming), the referendum in the pair of islands off the coast of Argentina(some call it the Falklands, others the Malvinas) wasn’t deemed a fraud by the wider international community. Argentina and several Latin American nations reject it outright.

@FacundoLucciano @Rx410 @toposint @Meorianguy22 @niggass69 Slight problem: Referendums can be rigged. Perhaps by compelling the people to vote one way. Or by deciding to discard certain votes. Or recording votes wrong. And another thing: The UN and a vast majority of the international community have deemed those referendums frauds.

@WorldDomStudios @joe_shipman The problem is that they all have an unfair red skew as they all trigger a visceral reflex, and have red as the default inaction state.

@joe_shipman Yes. Everyone on earth is handed a loaded gun. You can do nothing, or you can shoot yourself in the head for no reason. If >50% of people try to shoot themselves, all of the guns jam and everyone lives. There's also the woodchipper version, the poison pill version, blender etc.

@javisaidathing @waldenpod It’s actually very different. You introduce a salient & visceral threat absent in the original question, of which is the sinking ship. It is obvious that here, anyone would choose the vest that will always work, for themselves and for their child. Such is absent in the original.

Normal people’s thought process: 1st thought: I have to press blue to save others 2nd thought: Wait a minute, red is saving ones one life so everyone could save themselves 3rd thought: Many won’t push red, so I have to press blue to save others
SimonnichtPetrus@In_awe_of_God

> If all press blue, everyone lives > If all press red everyone lives > The realistic option isn’t that all press the same > If not everyone presses the same majority blue is by far the better outcome > Everyone should press blue

@apeiros @ChrisPacia Our hope is on that one toddler forgetting to vote… It only takes a low x for me to risk my life in this scenario. Why? In a population of 8 billion, just 1% voting blue and everyone else voting red would be about 80 million dead. Infants & toddlers make up 6.5-7%.

@ultimatecub0 @ChrisPacia The whole world will stay forever still because that one toddler doesn't care about the buttons and never presses any 😂 (also coma patients, well, whatever) But yeah, this changes it to a threshold question: "x% are forced to press blue" - at what x do you risk your life?

Red people are just living their lives as normal. Blue people are *going out of their way* to put their own lives at risk in a way that causes other people to have to risk their lives to save them. You tell me which side is acting unethically.

@apeiros @ChrisPacia They will be participating, and here’s my reasoning: Toddlers may opt to simply choose the color that they like, on account of being unable to grasp the abstract consequences an adult can. Cases involving woodchippers trigger visceral feelings and allow toddlers to grasp it easy.

@ChrisPacia Agreed. That's a good way to put it. The only viable reasoning in favor of blue so far is the assumption that people who need guardians (babies, dementia patients, etc.). are imparted with the ability to vote themselves, but not the reasoning. x.com/apeiros/status…

Regarding the red-blue button question (if you press red, you survive regardless; if you press blue, you die unless at least 50% press blue). Text in Alt + Reply.

@FabricioNakata @JeremiahDJohns Yeah, these sorts of hypotheticals are normally framed as all participants being able to make rational decisions. If we assume that noticeable percent of the population would be voting at random, then blue makes sense.

The red and blue button folks are talking past each other. Obviously the game-theoretic solution for your own personal safety is red. But some of us have this thing where we care about other people and having a societal Schelling point of blue saves billions of lives, so,
Romy@Romy_Holland

@_Void_Apostle_ @Aella_Girl the hypothetical involves babies smashing buttons. it involves old ladies with dementia. it involves the 250 million illiterate adults in india.

Everyone has to take a private vote by pressing a red or blue button. If more than 50% of people press the blue button, everyone turns into a girl. If less than 50% press the blue button, only people who pressed the red button turn into girls. Which button would you press?

Assuming no possible coordination: If everybody was rational, we would all individually pick red & be safe without needing coordination, trusting that the sum of individual interests would lead to the most optimized outcome. Except that many humans are irrational & dogmatic, and driven by idealistic / empathetic concerns, would pick blue, even if that requires coordination which is not guaranteed & which puts them as risk. Knowing this, even if you’re initially inclined to vote red, the actual moral choice, to avoid the death of those willingly putting their lives at risk, is to vote blue to maximize the chances of saving everybody. In short, if you know that others are not perfectly rational agents, to save them you have to go along with their irrationality, which is counter intuitive.

@6ft3SnowDay @_Void_Apostle_ @Aella_Girl Pressing Blue makes more sense in a situation involving players that do not play the game the same way that most adults would if you’re willing to bet that others are also willing to choose Blue to save the players that didn’t play the same way most adults would.

@_Void_Apostle_ @Aella_Girl Pressing red means you believe everyone has the ability to understand and pick the best decision. pressing blue means you don't believe humanity has the ability to make good choices and you're hoping you and enough others can join those making bad decisions to save everyone.

Everyone is presented with two choices. One is to not jump off a cliff. If you do jump off the cliff, you will die. However, if more people jump than do not jump, everyone will survive, and no one will die.
