@AdequateEmily This is because he has a specific vision he hasn't had the tools to manifest yet. Namely, a 9 episode mini series is his goal

@AdequateEmily Backrooms, specifically the web series, does a great job of telling a story with these cookie crumbs and doesn't devolve into "loreslop". Kane has a real story that is already written somewhere, beginning to end, but that main story hasn't been told yet.

Seeing the way people have been talking about TADC and Backrooms has convinced me that “lore” is the enemy in storytelling right now, people demand you focus on needless worldbuilding and not just tell a meaningful story with themes and symbols you can apply to life itself.

@NewAtlantisSun I think it’s like the Emperor’s New Clothes. Everyone is pretending to like it because everyone else does, and so all you “scholars” are discussing the meaning of the deeper aspects of the film when there’s actually nothing there— some of you being paid to do it.

Backrooms was pretty good. Enjoyable midmarket horror/drama, altho the psychological themes were pure A24 bait on very well worn ground. Good aesthetics and nice act 3 protagonist heel turn.

Kane Parsons was asked on The Tonight Show what he would bring to survive the Backrooms, to which he answered: “Hydrogen Bomb, a really big magnet, and a toaster.”

Interesting post by the art director on Obsession regarding what they made and how the crew sees little of the current money it’s making. Something to think about before individuals go ballyhooing on about ‘Indie Horror’

@Wendigoon8 It would be a better argument if his dad owned telltale games but he was just vfx artist there that would be like if your dad is a state senator and you become the president not nepotism

@Wendigoon8 It's also not even nepotism because Michael Parsons has like, zero pull or power or any sort of authority, even in the video game industry, LET ALONE the film industry.

@hopecorespecial @NekoHappix maybe not inherently lmao but it does increase the likelihood that they're not there because they're qualified. and either way this is a very different statement to saying that the idea that nepotism is bad is based in jealousy

@NekoHappix Nepotism isn’t inherently bad, that idea comes from jealousy. It can feel unfair for sure but everyone is gonna use whatever connections they can get, and Kane worked hard for this backrooms placement.

@TaskNo5 @SenorBarves @NekoHappix JFC, that is not what nepotism means. You need to be in a position of power to engage in nepotism. Words have meaning, you know. Was he privileged? Yes. Did he have an advantage? Yes. But nepotism? Absolutely not.

@SenorBarves @NekoHappix Who is saying that. All anyone is saying is that he benefited from a nepotistic upbringing and connections that other people don’t have because their father’s aren’t VFX leads. Anyone can learn Blender like he did, but not everyone has a family with knowledge and connections.

@TaskNo5 @NekoHappix That's actually NOT what nepotism is, but even if it was, that's not what happened. Michael Parsons' "connections" were completely non-existent. Kane was self-taught on blender and had passion, will, and luck that made him a YouTube success which got A24's attention. That's it.

@NekoHappix Nepotism is when your familial relationships are the reason why you are given a leg up to succeed

@konkonxo @NekoHappix So sad to hear Kane Parsons wasn't a homeless orphan living in squalor from a cardboard box and had to steal a computer from the library in order to use Blender. I guess he's just a nepo baby.

@NekoHappix Not necessarily nepotism but slightly disappointing that he didn’t come from nothing. But that’s only if you don’t have bigger problems in your life
