The fact that all of the mindless MAGA mouthpieces are in damage control mode right now speaks VOLUMES. This was a failure on all fronts. Trump went from demanding Iran "unconditionally surrender," to capitulating to the regime and accommodating them in ways that they would have never dreamed of before the war. Trump has been desperately searching for an offramp. This "memorandum of understanding" just kicks the can down the road, but that's all Trump needs to claim victory. The US has failed to extract any meaningful concessions from Iran. The MOU contains no serious commitment from Iran on nuclear weapons. Both sides agreed to two basic points: Reopening the Strait and lifting the American naval blockade, which on its own is a significant economic gain for Iran. Everything else is, AT BEST, a work in progress. The closure of the Strait of Hormuz was not a cause of the war, but a CONSEQUENCE of it. Yet Trump is celebrating its reopening like it's some kind of extraordinary achievement, when in reality, we are returning to a pre-war status quo. No, it's worse than that. We haven't gone back to square one, we've lost ground, we've lost bargaining power, we've LOST THE WAR. Thanks to Trump, Iran now knows that it can harness its control over the Strait as a weapon of leverage. From now on, the waters in and around the Strait will be subject to the whims of the Islamic Regime and IRGC. International laws won't mean a thing, every vessel that passes through will take on considerable risk, which means insurers will hike up their premiums, and once the US Navy is gone, there's nothing stopping Iran from levying "fees" on commercial ships. This isn't just about the Strait either. The US is setting up opportunities for Iran to cash in on massive windfalls. It's been reported that Iran will now have the ability to sell oil globally at free market rates. Forget war reparations for a moment, the revenue Iran stands to gain from this could exceed the value of most other formal arrangements. Moreover, according to JD Vance, the IRGC has seen the error of its ways, and both him and Jared Kushner have signaled that the US will establish a $300 BILLION "reconstruction" fund including private investments from around the world, which will no doubt come with its own kickbacks for Trump's inner circle. Kushner himself said it would help "corral international investment in iran" Basically, the US intends to bring Iran into the international club. Donald Trump called Obama's JCPOA one of the worst deals he's ever seen, and is now walking head first into an agreement that's materially worse in every way, and not just on matters of nuclear proliferation, but in ways that normalize relationships with Iran and unlock massive financial benefits for the regime. In the meantime, there's also no serious commitment from Iran regarding its continued funding of terrorist groups. One of "operation epic fury's" primary objectives was eliminating Iranian support for terrorist proxies like Hezbollah, but the MOU completely negates this objective by connecting the war in Lebanon with the war in Iran. To that point, at the behest of Netanyahu, Trump launched us into another illegal war of choice in the middle east under false pretenses, without consulting with our allies or Congress, without support from the American people, and without a plan for a protracted conflict. Bibi was nearly in the White House situation room when he played to Trump's ego and urged him to go to war on behalf of Israel. The CIA called the whole thing "farcical." Even some of Trump's own cabinet members expressed reservations, but ultimately yielded to Trump, who was most hawkish about going to war, trusting that everything would work out in the end. And where has that gotten us? Not only have we conceded leverage to Iran in practically all matters, but we've also come away from this prolonged and costly conflict with nothing concrete to show for it. 1/2
