Hiiiiiiiii, I’m the radiological expert of the Civil Defense Museum and I LOVE your post!☢️🥰 I just wanted to mention that if you are a for real modern day prepper though, using a Bendix Civil Defense dosimeter pen isn’t really reliable anymore and I take your safety VERY seriously. They were made to measure radiation in old units called “roentgens” (R) which have now been replaced with SI units like sieverts (Sv) for biological dose and grays (Gy) for absorbed radiation. These pens are also 50-70 years old, so the internal parts too can be pretty unreliable even if they are charged. There’s also no way to calibrate them modern day to make sure the readings are accurate. If you are just using one to play with for fun, that’s totally fine, I actually do the same thing.😊But for serious prepping, modern dosimeter pens like the S.E. International PEN or PEN500mR are much better! They will give you real time readings in modern units AND are far more reliable. Plus, you don’t need a hand crank to use them. The old Bendix CD dosimeter pens can’t generate their own voltage either, so a hand crank is also essential. It charges the internal electrostatic system that moves the needle inside and without it, the pen is basically useless because it won’t be able to read radiation.💗
