I find it funny that DMC was the first one of these action franchises that attempted the "Legacy character" trope, and the only one that has managed to make it work. Everyone else who followed has fumbled the concept in one way or the other.

@750Caitlin @TheRedGoner I find souls games to be kinder than most games when it comes to punishment for dying. For example, if you unlock a door and pick up an item before dying, the door will remain unlocked and the item will still be in your inventory. Only enemies respawn. Progress remains.

@TheRedGoner The punishment aspect is why I'm really not a fan of soulsborne games. I don't mind having to work up my skills to overcome a big challenge. But when the game gives me additional busywork after dying, like finding something I dropped, my motivation to keep going goes to zero.

Here is my theory of difficulty:
Game difficulty as a concept can be divided into execution (how hard is it to avoid mistakes/failure) and punishment (what the game does when mistakes/failure occur)
