Cloudy eyes in chickens are a warning sign that something isn’t right. It can affect their vision, feeding, and overall health, so early action is important.
Common Causes
1. Eye Infection (Bacterial or Viral)
Often comes with swelling, discharge, or closed eyes
Can be linked to respiratory diseases
2. Ammonia Irritation
Caused by dirty, wet litter
Strong smell in the coop can damage the eyes
3. Injury or Pecking
Scratch or peck from other birds
Dust or sharp objects entering the eye
4. Vitamin A Deficiency
Poor nutrition leads to weak eye health
May also show as poor growth and dull feathers
5. Diseases (Serious cases)
Conditions like infectious coryza or Newcastle disease
Usually includes sneezing, nasal discharge, or weakness
Organic Treatment (Natural Support)
1. Clean the Eye
Use clean warm water or saline solution
Gently wipe the eye 2 times daily
2. Aloe Vera Remedy
Extract fresh aloe vera gel
Mix with small clean water
Drop lightly into the eye or apply around it
Use 2 times daily for 3–5 days
3. Garlic Water Boost
Crush 2–3 cloves of garlic
Mix in 1 liter of water
Give as drinking water to boost immunity
4. Turmeric Solution
Add a small pinch of turmeric to warm water
Use to gently clean the eye (anti-inflammatory)
5. Improve Environment
Change wet litter immediately
Ensure good ventilation
Reduce dust in the coop
When to Take It Seriously
• Eye completely closed or swollen
• Thick pus or bad smell
• Many birds affected at once
• Bird stops eating
👉 At this stage, isolate the chicken quickly to prevent spread.
Prevention
• Keep coop clean and dry always
• Provide balanced feed (include greens for Vitamin A)
• Avoid overcrowding
• Regularly check birds for early signs
