For the past few years I’ve been growing this project called ‘The Idea Institute’. The premise was to make the creative process more transparent and to see if it’s possible to have a deeper understanding of our imaginations. I had the opportunity to work with Nifty Gateway, being offered a multi year partnership that could grow and become something fruitful for both parties. Believing they had a long-term vision for the IPs they were building, I jumped in feet first. We officially started working together last March. During this period I had the pleasure of collaborating with my lead producer Chrisly who couldn’t have been a better collaborator on all fronts. Cindy and Anton were my right hand designers who brought all of the web design and the game interface to life in a ridiculously quick manner. Ashlin was our always reliable product manager, helping relay our wants to the dev team and seeing what was realistic in the timeframe. Nine months in and we had got to a beta build of the game, an interactive live site, numerous website designs, finished artworks, a generative player ID system and pack system. About a week before the project’s planned release, we were told that the project wasn’t going to go through and that future partnerships were dropped. It was a deeply disappointing and poorly handled ending to what had otherwise been a meaningful experience. I want to say sorry to everyone who supported the project and was excited for it. The way things ended didn’t reflect the care and effort that everyone put into building it. I am putting the project on the back burner for a while to take time to process and decide on next steps. While this has been a difficult experience, I'm currently working on a few projects I care a lot about, so I can’t ask for much more. Cheers! - Kane

17 March 1999. Rod Hull died (aged 63). He always appeared with Emu, a mute and highly aggressive arm-length puppet. Hull died in a tragic accident while trying to adjust the TV aerial on the roof of his bungalow, then slipping and falling to his death.

Art is how culture remembers itself.

I’ve spent the last year building something new. A new body of work. AFTER JADE. 9 artworks. 7 cast glass and jade sculptures. 2 digital paintings. Debuting at Hong Kong @ArtBasel. Created in collaboration with renowned atelier @AspreyStudio. For over a decade my work has lived mostly in painting and drawing. But the worlds I build have always felt like they belonged to something not from here. Glass and jade. Materials tied deeply to Chinese visual history. They become vessels for my own mythology. Relics. Precious objects filled with narrative. Cast. Carved. Preserved like artifacts from a story that never quite existed. AFTER JADE March 27–29 Hong Kong Art Basel Grateful. See you then.

I still truly can't believe this. From the bored ape character to Hong Kong @ArtBasel. Who knew this drawing a bedraggled monkey would take me here. Tomorrow, I'm beyond excited to formally announce my newest art series. An expanded world beyond my traditional paintings into glass and jade sculpture. Partnered with the legendary atelier @AspreyStudio to bring these to life. Concept designed and molded into cast glass and jade, these sculptures are my dialogue with tradition. Storytelling from my background growing up in a Chinese household and paying homage and respect to the historial visual references that have inspired my work for over a decade. Yes, you'll recognize some of my characters in there. Perils of Sese. Shermie. More importantly, these newest artworks will sit elegant, historical, and significant in my ever-evolving art practice. Grateful.
