When I was growing up, my father would never accept anything wrapped in red. It didn’t matter how beautiful the gift was, if it carried that colour, he would gently push it aside. I only came to understand why much later. His generation had lived through a one‑party era that left deep scars, so deep that even colours became reminders of pain. His burdens didn’t end there. During the 11 years of the previous administration, he was persecuted and prosecuted until the court cleared his name. For him, and for many of his peers, red was not just a colour; it was a symbol of hurt, and memories they wished they could forget. As part of a younger generation, I’ve spent years reassuring him that colours do not harm us; people, systems, and actions do. Political party colours are symbols, nothing more. But when symbols are used to persecute, victims naturally transfer their pain onto whatever represents that moment in history. I may not have fully persuaded him yet, but I have always believed that we must practice what we preach. And so, a touch of red felt not only appropriate but meaningful as we commissioned the new NaTCA headquarters, a project that began under the previous APC administration.
