@pjmcgeary There is a 0/10 chance I would have the ability to put words together with such elegant fashion like you did there. I’d take 30 min to write this out and edit it just to make sure it doesn’t read like a dumpster fire

Rate my complaint handling skills (sent this out before hitting the road this morning so I wanted to get it done before our team asked how to handle it) 👇🏻 Backstory: I tweeted yesterday about someone calling off on their first job ever with us. This caused us to scramble and have to get a second cleaner of ours to someone’s bigger cleaning. Rightfully so, they were upset 1 cleaner showed up later than the first. Learned a ton from the summit I went to and @andywalkerhq made a great point — refund more than necessary and move on. Eliminate the headache and keep the real estate in your mind free. And no, I didn’t use AI for this response. Typed it up in 2 mins and sent away.

@AlexLathery Hell yeah brother! I need to find me some of these. These jobs sound way better than Residential 3 room repaints.

This church job we landed from ranking on Chat GPT We've already locked $27,691 in painting the auditorium We just got verbal acceptance on two extensions worth $54,854 of work We still have an estimate to do on painting the exterior And Friday we hear back about a $49,611 warehouse bid... what a time!
Alex Lathery@AlexLathery

This year we’re leaning heavily into simple job-site videos thanks to some solid advice off X Most of ours take: - 60 seconds to film - 60 seconds to add captions in CapCut No crazy editing. Just document the work. They consistently get 2–3× the reach and engagement of any other format we test.

So how many of you SMB fellas are actually integrating AI into your day to day and not just playing with it. I can’t keep up with it all. What do I need? What’s a shiny object? Openclaw was the talk for a while not its quiet. Still don’t even know what it does.

Today I learned what prevailing wages are when winning a government job in Illinois. I won a job to repaint the stucco fascia of a city hall building for a small (I mean like 500 people small) village. Not a big job really at all. Moral of the story - I didn’t account for that in the bid. Looks like I’ll be doing this one solo 😂

I did about $180,000 in revenue on my painting biz last year while working a full time job as a lineman. Left w2 at the end of 2025 Since Jan 1st I have $101,000 already lined up. With no action the first 3 weeks of January as I was figuring out FB ads and spent 10 days in Punta Cana last week. (I’m the sales guy, I’m gone = no sales) The point: If you think your crushing it part time your going to dominate expectations full time. I’m excited to see where I can go this year. Take the leap.

It all comes down to intention in my opinion. Are you doing to because the views of these types of videos can be monetized or are you doing it to generally try and create a feasible, sustainable way to help others - and maybe even give other people the idea to help in a similar fashion. I think what your doing is awesome Cole, i think your intention to help is pure, and something you genuinely enjoy to do. I hope to find a way to do something similar in my biz In the future.

I had a friend recently ask me if I was worried that us doing the videos would take away from what we were doing Heres my thought process People need help, and unless you can create a sustainable system that finds that help you will always hit a point where you have no more to give Goal of our content is to build a system so that the videos actually pay for our ability to help people who really need it There will always be people who choose to believe the worst version of things about you, don’t let that be a reason you don’t do something Proud of our videos Been a really cool experience to get to help people over the last 6 months

@juliusmarchi Love to see it. Making moves. Some people just talk about it and analyze their opportunities away. Keep grinding!

Officially made my first real offer on a duplex. Not a massive deal but it's a big step for me. It's making it feel a little more real now & feels good to finally take a step above just analyzing properties. You won't truly understand what your market will accept until you start making offers. So regardless of what happens with this one, more offers will be made.

I quit my W2 One year ago. Here are the 3 things I wish I had known then: 1. It's easier to get work than you'd think. Especially when there is no other option 2. Knowing your numbers is your job as the owner. You should know how much is in your checking and savings account 3. Your spouse is your business partner whether they're on the docs or not. Having a supportive spouse can keep you going even when it feels grim.

If the only way to get the sale is to discount the service. Run. The customer is already in “taking mode” In my experience - these customers demand the most attention, want the highest quality, and create the most grey hairs. Their expectations are through the roof for already discounted work. These people just think different. And it’s always at your expense when you think you’re already helping them out with the discount. Hold the line. They can either afford you and your service or not. I had a customer I discounted to fill a schedule gap, took money off and added some things to the scope that we don’t normally do to help her out and keep my guys busy. The most needy customer I’ve ever worked for - got blamed and yelled at for previous work done we didn’t even do, it was gnarly.

@AlexLathery This has been on my to do list….. what do you use for calendar integration?

Quick conversion tactic for service businesses: If you run an in-person estimate sales process, add a booking link to your thank-you page. Lead fills out the form → lands on the thank you page → books the estimate immediately. Calendar availability is auto-synced and you can set rules like: - minimum time between bookings - only certain days/times You capture the lead, lock the appointment, and can do qualifying in the follow-up and before the estimate

Owning a business in a nutshell. You are solving problems 24/7 It’s stressful, but also rewarding and addicting like a video game Got sales dialed in? Well now you have to figure out how to produce all the jobs. Customers constantly complaining? You got to dial in quality control - fire/re-hire - and still keep jobs moving forward. Sometimes you have to get back in the trenches. It’s kind of like losing weight. Everyone wants a six pack but no one wants to do the commitment and work required - Most people want to be comfortable, clock out at 5, and that’s why most people should just stick with a W2. Owning and building a business is the exact opposite of routine and comfort lol One day your in Punta Cana “making money on the beach” The next you want to jump off a cliff

Really contemplating hiring a person for the phones. Their only job would be to take inbound calls, reach out to new FB leads, and run my initial call script to get estimates scheduled on my calendar and set the tone to be ready to make a decision when I show up. Takes my least favorite task off my plate - these calls literally drain my energy. Not sure why but I despise them. Keeps estimates moving forward, speed to lead up, frees time up for me to run sales, estimate, and project manage. Could probably train a VA to do this pretty well. I think I just talked myself into it.

@tannerdripjobs Does your GM do estimates or do you have a specific person for that? Thought I seen once you were having estimates done with a VA? What’s your VA do vs office admin person do?

There's no "right" way to build a home service business. Here's how I have my House Painting business setup: ✅ - 1.5M Revenue YoY ✅ - 5 hours per week for me / work from home ✅ - GM Operator handles all day to day ✅ - No salespeople, 1 estimator ✅ - 1 Office admin is remote ✅ - 1 VA in Phillipines ✅ - 4 Used Vans & 1 Used Prius (Sales) ✅ - No Shop - Teams take vans home ✅ - 500+ 5-Star reviews (Highest rated) ✅ - 3 Crews (9 painters) ✅ - 20% of Work Quoted Virtually ✅ - House Painting Only (No Cabinets/Hard Stuff) ✅ - $4k/m Ad Spend FB / $2k Google ✅ - 15% NET Profit ✅ - Automated systems ( @dripjobs ) ✅ - Haven't been to a job site or met a customer in almost a year (unless to say hi to my team in passing) Close at a 30-35% closing ratio And my stress is virtually 0. Build your business your way!
