What did Nazis think about Christians and Christianity? It's an interesting and surprisingly difficult question since most rank-and-file Nazis were, so far as they knew, Christian and respected the Christian religion as such. Most of the Nazi leadership weren't and didn't, however. Hitler, for his part, expressed privately that he was no fan of Christianity, or so it is reported in multiple sources, seeing it mostly as a bunch of foolishness, but he expressed positivity toward religion, toward Churches, toward Christianity, and toward both major denominations (Catholic and Protestant) in Germany. Sources suggest this was mostly political maneuvering and did not represent his true views. Between the two, Hitler, like most Nazi elite, saw the Catholic Church as less realistic and more suppressive of the true German (Aryan) spirit. He saw Protestantism and the Reformation as an expression of that German spirit that ultimately failed. He records this view publicly in chapter 3 of Mein Kampf, first volume, though he elaborates very little. He seemed to be positive toward Christian socialist views, although he didn't think they were sufficiently pan-German enough. Alfred Rosenberg is the more interesting character on the subject. Named Chief Ideologist of the Third Reich, it was Rosenberg's job to explain what it meant to be a Nazi and to teach it, not only by forming school curricula but also by creating the training more elite Nazis would have to go through. Rosenberg cannot be said to have liked Christianity, especially Catholicism, and there are relatively good reasons to believe Hitler's views agreed with Rosenberg's, not least that Rosenberg never lost his job. Some of what Hitler wrote on the issue hints in the same direction as Rosenberg pretty strongly, though, to be sure, even without being so explicit. In Rosenberg's 1930 book The Myth of the Twentieth Century, in which he lays out a comprehensive explanation of the underlying deep mythological foundations of the Nazi worldview, he presents a complicated picture that is hostile to Christianity as it really is and is somewhat warmer to Christianity as it could be remade and used by the Nazis. He believed Hitler to be offering a new (third?) revelation to the world that corrects the Bible, for example. In broad strokes, the summary goes like this. 1) Rosenberg is very hostile to the Catholic Church, which he believes is possessed by a lot of nonsense whose forceful control of Europe effectively destroyed the best elements of it, namely the Aryan blood it had been built upon and concurrent character traits and values that came with that noble and superior blood. [Note: Rosenberg's "Myth of the Blood" indicates that character and values are direct consequences of race (blood), which is directly tied to the true soul of man.] The Catholic Church (or "Roman Church," as he usually calls it) is a corrupt institution that forces people into all kinds of Levantine (Jewish and Syrian) magic, Etruscan demonology, and African nonsense while stifling the free spirit of man and murdering good Europeans of free conscience (Aryan trait) for having free consciences. He is very much NOT A FAN. Incidentally, he also believed that Boniface, in slashing down German Paganism and converting the German Volk in the 8th century, did tremendous damage to European Nordic (Aryan) blood and belief and deeply contaminated the last and greatest stronghold of Nordic (Aryan) blood and belief in the world. 2) Rosenberg, like Hitler, expresses mixed praise for Protestantism (likely meaning Lutheranism, overwhelmingly). He sees the Reformation and Martin Luther as direct expressions of the Nordic-Aryan spirit of individual independence and force of will but simultaneously believes Luther compromised the whole project by endorsing both the New and Old Testaments as a single Bible, thus incorporating Jewish elements. He therefore likes the Protestant spirit but not the Protestant faith. He credits Luther for his late-life antisemitism but remarks that it came too late because the Bible had already become popular and accessible in both testaments, including the Jewish one. 3) Rosenberg does not like Paul very much, though he's glad to lean on him where he can to criticize Jews. He sees Paul as ultimately taking what Jesus provided and working all kinds of Jewish nonsense into it in order to create a religion for Jews. 4) Rosenberg has a very different conception of Jesus than most Christians. Jesus was certainly not God to the Nazi elite. He was an Aryan (Nordic) who was in the Levant at the beginning of the new era (on Church reckoning) who did not do miracles or raise from the dead. He was a Nordic Aryan who taught those values, fought the Jewish legalism of the Pharisees and Sadducees, and who was put to death for his impertinence by the same low racial mongrels as still trouble the world. His teachings and actions are good where they are in alignment with proofs that he's Nordic Aryan and probably false later inventions and Levantine magic (appropriating legends stories about Zoroaster and Hadrian onto him, at least, plus rewriting his story to fulfill nonsense Jewish apocalyptic thinking they stole from the Persian Zoroastrians to begin with). Rosenberg likes the "real" Jesus but believes he is lost in a mystical, magical, and Jewish Bible that wrongly depicts him, which he sees as tragic if not evil. Interestingly, Rosenberg more or less rejects the idea of Roman persecution of Christians outright, saying it's vastly overblown and mostly the whining of African bishops who were being put down for their troublemaking and victimhood storytelling of Roman bishops who wanted to be more important in Rome than they really were. These beliefs Rosenberg collected under the extant heading of "Positive Christianity," which was meant to focus on the "positive aspects of Christ's life" rather than the "negative aspects" that Christians make central: in particular, salvation through the resurrection. Rosenberg is insulted that Christians would believe that by dying (weakness) anything worth doing was done and thus rejects the actual core of Christianity. Needless to say, then, Nazi "Positive Christianity" is not Christianity at all. The purpose of this "Positive Christianity" in the Third Reich was to keep Christians on the Nazi plantation while moving them toward Nazism and away from Christianity. Rosenberg, like Hitler, knew the Nazis could not succeed by alienating too many Christians or turning them against their movement, so they created an ersatz Christianity rooted in Nazi "blood" mythology as a bridge faith away from Christianity and onto Nazism. How long it would take for the average German Nazi in the rank and file to cross the bridge away from their Christian beliefs is not known, but the time they had (roughly 15-20 years) was not sufficient. Overall, Rosenberg holds out in the core Nazi mythology that there's a different Jesus that can be recovered from the Bible, in a way, and revealed for who he really was, an anti-Jewish Nordic Aryan who was fighting the good fight against those bastard Jews and was killed for it, like so many others. He believes this story was very wrongly told (in the Gospels) and is believed in the wrong ways for the wrong reasons but is ultimately an expression of the Aryan spirit that has been corrupted with other nonsense. He rejects creedal Christianity more or less completely as nonsense rituals shot through with Jewish nonsense and both African and Syrian magic. These rituals are meant, in his view, to distract from the true view of Jesus and to suppress the human (Aryan/Nordic) spirit. He sees the Catholic Church primarily as a political object mostly organized by (already racially fallen) Roman and African Bishops meant to squash the human spirit and to replace the high value of honor with the low value of love, which it enforces through brutality and force largely in the name of strange demonological beliefs imported from the Etruscans, Africa, and the Levant, all far from Aryan nobility of blood and spirit. Protestantism barely tried to break free and reassert the German (Aryan/Nordic) will but failed in the quest because of its attachment to so many of the parts of the above in its faith. Basically, it kept itself too Jewish in a lot of ways, including theological beliefs about Jews taken from the Bible and its retaining of the Old Testament (there's a nontrivial amount of explicit Marcionism happening in Nazi belief). Both Rosenberg and Hitler, by the way, expressed in writing that they appreciate the Catholic Church for understanding the problem of the Jews better than do the Protestants, though they see both as heavily "Jewish" in their construction. When we go a little deeper, we see clear Gnostic threads as well that aren't exactly uniquely attacking Christianity but attack it through its foundations in the Old Testament. Rosenberg is very clear that he believes the Jews basically had some backwards magical desert religion up until they were in Babylonian Exile. There, in Persia, they encountered Zoroastrianism and the (Aryan) sun god Ahura Mazda, his antithesis in the evil Ahriman, religious endogamy (mating only within clan), and other traits of true, real, Sun-god Aryan belief and stole it. They took these beliefs with them back out of Exile after Cyrus allowed it and incorporated them into their own little provincial religion, elevating "Jehovah" to the status of universal monotheistic God, thus tyrant of the world, and naming Satan as his enemy by rewriting the idea of Satan in terms of the Zoroastrian Ahriman. This is apparently visible in the book of Isaiah and the other post-Exilic texts. Rosenberg is generally hostile to all monotheistic (or single-idea, or "monistic") systems, too, by the way. With the Jews, he dips directly into Gnostic heresy by insisting their G-d is not only a false god but an imposed universal tyrant. The true religions are ones that worship the Sun God. The Zoroastrian Persians (Aryans) called this deity Ahura Mazda, the original Brahmin Indians (Nordic Aryans) called him Brahman (before corrupting the idea), the Greeks called it/them Pallas Apollo and Pallas Athena, the Romans called it Apollo and later Sol Invictus, and the Vikings called it Odin (sort of). Christianity, in his view, suffers from the same monotheistic (monistic) lie as Judaism because it adopts their universal tyrant God and rejects Sun worship. This is a fundamental rejection of Christianity on an even deeper level. So, it's reasonable to say that the Nazis were theologically, mythologically, and philosophically hostile to Christianity (and to Christians) but eager to use both politically and therefore savvy and manipulative about them. This is complicated rather tremendously because the term "Nazi" is not sufficiently clear to make this claim, as most rank-and-file Nazis didn't really believe much or any of the actual Nazi worldview, though they were all being educated in it (slowly) and Nazi elites had to be steeped in it and well-versed (their states of belief varied, as far as I can tell). Complicating matters more, I've relied almost entirely on Alfred Rosenberg here, given his explicit, organized writings and his role as Chief Ideologist of the Third Reich (that is, the guy who wrote the official story of what they were supposed to believe as Nazis). Across the uppermost echelons of the Nazi ranks were a wide variety of beliefs, many much more atheistic, some much more explicitly Germanic-Pagan. This variety of belief is likely mirrored across the upper ranks (e.g., among the SS). Hitler's own personal beliefs are mostly left mysterious (at least to my knowledge) but seemed to be largely pantheistic with elements of this Myth of the Blood and strong worship of his rather brutal view of Nature herself.
