@mchooyah The lessons of recent history are that major powers are often thwarted by smaller forces that simply refuse to give up - Ukraine Afghanistan (2020, 1989, 1880, 1842) Iraq Syria Vietnam Israel (1947-48) And so on...

@Yellingatcloud1 @LeftyWinter I included both NHS+private spend. I have BUPA which costs my employer just £165 per month (I'm in my 60s). The NHS effectively prevents private health providers from profiteering excessively. But most of the time I just use the NHS because it's convenient and works fine for me.

@Roobarb59 @LeftyWinter Sure if you want longer wait times, understaffing, outdated technology and junior doctors with morale problems that go on strike, chronic understaffing and other issues. Their system has issues too

@TrentTelenko The only reason the US has bases anywhere outside the USA is to support its global power projection. For example, the current bases in Europe serve no practical purpose for the defence of their host countries. (but some could be relocated to better do so)

@BallouxFrancois "reads like borderline satire at times" I'm guessing you've not consumed much content from Melanie Phillips then? 🤣🤣🤣 She's particularly entertaining on "The moral maze", a BBC Radio 4 programme...

This article is utter tosh, whatever one's position on Trump, Pope Leo XIV, or the morality of the Iran war. Essentially every paragraph is nonsense. It reads like borderline satire at times. One example of the idiocy of the piece among others, I quote "... 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘗𝘰𝘱𝘦 𝘩𝘢𝘴 𝘢𝘭𝘴𝘰 𝘪𝘨𝘯𝘰𝘳𝘦𝘥 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘢𝘴𝘵𝘰𝘯𝘪𝘴𝘩𝘪𝘯𝘨𝘭𝘺 𝘱𝘳𝘦𝘤𝘪𝘴𝘦 𝘣𝘰𝘮𝘣𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘰𝘧 𝘮𝘪𝘭𝘪𝘵𝘢𝘳𝘺 𝘵𝘢𝘳𝘨𝘦𝘵𝘴", which is a truly insane thing to write, given that the first salvo of the war was literally a double-tap on a school that killed ~150 schoolgirls. It's puzzling this embarrassing piece passed an editor at the Times. thetimes.com/comment/column…

@JeffDGlazerite @Grant_Colgate It's not better for you. It's cheaper, overall, for the manufacturer. Although most cars still also have mechanical locks, they now only support ~10 key bittings, rather than hundreds previously. It's now the immobiliser that primarily keeps the car safe.

@TrentTelenko Oh dear. The only one killing the 'special relationship' is Donald Trump and his MAGA clowns. Also killing every other relationship (except Putin of course) and all trust in the USA. Can we have the sensible Trent Telenko back please?

@wil_da_beast630 "They won" means that the IRGC regime is still in power, and won't give up. History is lettered with examples of major powers being thwarted by smaller forces which simply refuse to give up. Modern US is brilliant at winning battles. Winning wars - not so much.

I don't like braggadocious talk about this sort of thing, but we seem to have killed 7,000 Iranian troops and lost 15 people (albeit largely due to armor: 600 hurt). Iran's entire senior leadership is dead. Their nuke program is gone. This is all being quite openly discussed, in real, "gray net" spaces. We should push harder on the Strait, but what does "they won" logically mean?

America is the first country in over two centuries to lose a war to Iran, thanks to Trump

@afneil The lesson never learned: A major power can be thwarted by a minor force who simply refuses to give up. See also - Ukraine Iraq Vietnam Israel (vs British 1947-48) Afghanistan (2000s, 1989, 1880, 1842) And so on...

You missed out: The Iranian regime is still in power, more extreme, more oppressive than ever. It now controls the Strait of Hormuz, a power it didn’t have before Feb 28 and which it didn’t have even during the prolonged Iran-Iraq War. It still feels strong enough not to agree peace on US-Israeli terms. And still has enough missiles/drones to attack its neighbours, who are wondering what will become of them if Iran continues to grip the Strait. There. I think that gives a more compete picture.
Inside_Israel_Intel@inside_IL_intel

You’ve heard it for weeks now: “No clear objective.” “Mission creep.” “U.S. and Israel are in over their heads.” “Iran is holding strong.” Watch the footage again. Then ask yourself if any of that matches reality. What you are looking at is not a stalemate. It is not a drawn-out exchange. It is not two equal sides trading blows. It is the systematic dismantling of a nation-state’s military architecture. Air defenses collapsed. Command and control degraded. Missile infrastructure targeted and reduced. Strategic sites hit repeatedly, at will. This is what dominance looks like. The narrative that the U.S. and Israel “failed to define victory” only works if you ignore what actually happened on the ground. Because in operational terms, the objectives are clear: • Iran’s ability to defend its own airspace was broken • Its capacity to project missile force was severely degraded • Critical military and nuclear infrastructure was set back in a measurable, lasting way That is not ambiguity. That is outcome. There is a difference between political messaging and battlefield reality. Politically, you can spin this however you want. You can say it wasn’t enough. You can argue about what comes next. But you cannot look at the scale, the tempo, and the results of what you see here and honestly claim that Iran “held its ground.” It didn’t. It was penetrated, dismantled, and set back in ways that will take years to rebuild, if it can rebuild at all. This video doesn’t just show strikes. It shows the gap between the story being told and the reality on the ground. And that gap is getting harder to hide.

@if28iz1v @afneil I think that there are probably very few, if any mines in the centre channel (at 4 miles wide it would take hundreds to be truly effective) - but insurers won't underwrite that risk.

@if28iz1v @afneil Like Ukraine, Iran needs no navy. They can attack ships from land with drones and missiles. Insurers won't cover a ship at risk of attack. Operators won't move a ship without insurance. The 'safe route' skirts the Iranian coast, not the centre channel which ships usually use.

@Lillard1985 @wartranslated Ah... the 'launch codes' nonsense again. Every nuclear weapon is detonated by closing a relay. Replacing the electronics isn't difficult. The *actual* problems would have been the huge cost of maintaining both the warheads and a viable delivery system.

@BillDrill11 @VeryBrexitProbs Except that 'free healthcare' actually saves nations money overall - For example, The UK spends ~$3500 per capita p.a. on healthcare The USA spends ~$18,500 per capita for only around 96% of the population. Lots of US people getting rich off healthcare...

@VeryBrexitProbs I truly hope that ends up being the case but I think the real outcome isn’t gonna be as comfortable. My guess is that free healthcare is gonna start to look like a lot of planes and ships and guns that Europeans are actually gonna have to pay for themselves.

You’ll be screwed without us.” Europeans: “I’m sure we’ll manage. Bye then.” MAGA: “Better start learning Russian. You won’t last 15 minutes without us. You’re a bunch of pussies!!!” Europeans: “Still here?” MAGA: “We’ve got 300 aircraft carriers and 10 gazillion rockets and space lasers! You europoors still have cannons!” Europeans: yawn in French, go for three-hour lunch. MAGA: “USA! USA! USA! You’ll beg us to come back!!!” Europeans: order a second bottle of Chablis.
