It is wrong to deny access to the most holy site in Christianity, period, but this becomes especially exacerbated when • other holy sites are allowed 50 people or less during war time restrictions, and 4 priests were stopped by police to celebrate a private mass. • today is the start to Holy Week, and the holy Sacrament of Mass carries so much weight. • this has never happened before in modern history, even under the threat of war and violence. Not during COVID, not during every other Arab-Israeli conflict, not during WWI and WWII, not during most of the Ottoman Empire, not even during the Crusades. This is tough to wrap our heads around, but the Church does not have a primary responsibility to “keep people safe.” To the contrary—we know it is often dangerous in this world to be a Christian, as was promised to us by Christ Himself. The Church *does* have a primary responsibility to offer the Sacraments and a place to worship, that we may keep our eyes fixed on heaven in the midst of a broken world. It is, by the way, also immensely troubling to see access to the Western Wall so intensely restricted during Passover, and access to the al Aqsa Mosque so intensely restricted during Eid. No government of any nation should ever have the means to restrict religious freedom to “50 people or less.” Ever.

My heart is absolutely broken over the news from Jerusalem today that the Israeli government has denied access to the Church of the Holy Sepulchre to Cardinal Pizzaballa and 4 other priests to celebrate a private mass on behalf of the faithful denied the right to gather on Palm Sunday, and yours should be too. This is an unprecedented move that has ramifications and impact worldwide, and matters deeply in our continued fight for religious freedom around the world.
