Here's Cathy Stinear @StrokeScience to remind us that predicting outcome is hard and we shouldn't rely on initial impairment (especially in the more severe patients) - so think of tools like PREP2 #UKSF20 that can improve prediction accuracy

Espenhahn et al. report that motor skill learning ability is preserved after stroke, but diminished compared to healthy controls, and, also, they suggest that beta oscillations may have value as markers of motor system (dys)function after stroke. bit.ly/33CquPN

They all show that SSRIs on their own don’t work (we knew this from animal studies back in 1970s) but have not investigated SSRIs + rehab/training (which did work in animal studies back in 1970s) #readtheliterature there was no rationale for these big expensive RCTs

Too often we see people failing when returning to work or their relationships unravelling post-stroke because of changes affecting their higher cognitive functions. Much more focus is required on sophisticated assessment and ecologically valid, effective interventions.
