Over the last year @jiamixue and I have been running a reading group in Toronto to understand the background beliefs that shape the world we live in.
So far we have read close to 40 seminal papers including from: Alan Turing, C. Thi Nguyen, Hannah Aendt and Charles Taylor.
Next quarter we are starting a project to look at the relationship between Religion and Work.
We want to understand: What are our current ideas about work? Do these have anything to do with religion? If so, what is it? What is the relationship between our projects and faith? Can we treat our work religiously? Should we?
To investigate this we are going to read Weber, Adam Smith (Sentiments not Wealth), Dōgen, Marx, Simone Weil, Frederick Douglass, @WillManidis and @nabeelqu

@creatine_cycle I don’t have a specific thought on bpc157, but it’s absolutely lunacy that a few years ago this kind of conversation would be enforced as unlicensed practice of medicine and now we’ve just decided none of this matters and that’s a wildly consequential decision

my thoughts on BPC-157 is that IF you are going to use it, you should absolutely NOT use it if you have a history of or have hereditary malignancies. you should also not continuously take BPC-157.
while we don't have enough data, BPC's promotion of VEGF in mostly rodent studies is enough to deter me from using it even in the short term.
when dosing stops, VEGF seems to return to normal so it's insane for me to hear that people are "blasting and cruising" this compound especially in neurotic tech circles

People are destroying SMB B2B software but there’s a meaningful chance HUBS/INTU are AI winners:
I was listening to @travisk who recently said:
“LTV:CAC with a sales machine, especially if you go [after] small businesses, is life on hard mode. Anybody who’s crushed it on SMB, those guys are special individuals who've made that happen. Because life in the SMB B2B world is no joke."
Hard mode. Sounds moaty to me. Some thoughts on how the market could be wrong re: HUBS/INTU
1. SMB is brutally, brutally hard to make the math work, so counter intuitively there’s less competition. And in some sense the survivors are anti-fragile. They keep consolidating share during downturns
2. They have aggregated the customers and have the scale economics
3. AI will encourage full-platform adoption as agents benefit from max surface area and clean data
4. SMB are less tech savvy. Will just want tech that works.
5. Can either roll up space or launch incremental features cheaply w AI
6. Low cost/freemium competition is not new. Vibe coding doesn’t change that.
7. AI will cause an explosion in small business creation

if i were a regulator forced to clean up this mess, i think the obvious solution is to hit the enablers hard that pushed this stuff downmarket without evidence (jail them!) and then leave the drugs a choose your own adventure for patients that do the work to research

fda has a lot of challenges facing it over the next 10-15 years- but i do think one of the weirdest residues of our current moment is that they let the cat out of the bag in allowing relatively healthy patients be extremely risk on with peptides, etc. hard to undo that

my observation is that the way we make decisions around acceptable risk in medicine are based around a "reasonableness" standard that may have been common a decade ago, but certainly isn't today.
young people are hilariously risk on with experimental drugs. update accordingly

Sorry to be the downer because this is an impressive story in some senses. But it is ~trivially easy to make a single mRNA vaccine. It's not hard. I cure mice of various cancers with various therapeutics all the time. I've made mice lose more weight in a month than tirzepatide does in a year. What is hard and expensive is proving its BOTH safe AND effective **in a randomized and controlled study in humans** while ALSO manufacturing it at clinical scale and grade. I am happy for this man and his dog. It is impressive. But y'all are overhyping it.
